Williams has poor ball control and bringing him on cost us. Braga would have controlled that ball in the middle of the park instead of giving it away. Maybe Williams will turn out to be the sort of player you bring on when you need a goal, but he’s not someone to hold the ball and protect a lead.

AI researchers are taking up smoking because they expect AI to cure cancer, says Palantir CTO
Some AI believers expect the technology to make smoking-related health risks like cancer a thing of the past, Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar said.

It’s not clear whether Burnham is referring here to publicly known social media manipulation, unresolved suspicions about pro-Brexit campaign funding or something else. Still, it’s about time this was acknowledged, so good for him.

Be careful what you wish for. As things stand, the French look far more likely to put the punch down people in masks into government.

Scotland’s defenders too slow to play a high line, manager too slow to make changes when the game turned, McPake and Bowie showed why they should have started. Let’s hope this manager learns from his mistakes, unlike the last one.

Happy International Orange Wine Day, to those who appreciate it. I certainly do, so I marked it by attending an orange wine tasting. Interesting history and some very nice wine. Far from being a modern fad, orange wine predates what we now know as white wine.

Scotland should have won that game, but the second half showed real progress nevertheless. Not seen them play with that kind of attacking intent for a long time. More please!

“So many magical moments” says BBC commentator of Steve Clarke’s time as Scotland manager. I can think of a handful during a long stretch of otherwise dismal anti-football. Mostly I remember his lack of imagination and his loyalty to players and tactics that failed repeatedly. Not missed by me.

I believe that with technology as powerful this we should always err on the side of caution and ignore industry lobbyists who tell us to stop worrying and give them our money. You do the “both sides” thing if you like.

I’m certainly not talking about the tech bosses. I’m pretty sure they have no real idea of what they’re dealing with. All they care about is profit and power.

So we give equal weight to a know-nothing politician who wafts his hand to say there isn’t a problem and people who’ve worked on the tech and say there is? It’s an opinion.

I listen most closely to experts who work in AI and have every incentive to say there isn’t a problem, but instead say the opposite.

I don’t think that’s correct. Labour’s timidity on immigration and Europe is purely electoral. Losing to the populist right would only entrench that. Also, you’re ignoring the impact that Burnham’s pledge on PR would have on these debates. The best route to what you is still Labour’s re-election.

They don’t currently have defenders capable of playing out from the back and still won’t when the injured players return. Falkirk found it so easy to peg them back and force mistakes.

It shouldn’t be forgotten that Galloway was one of the first UK politicians to boast of his involvement with crypto financing. The fact that he is currently living in Moscow because he fears arrest in the UK may well be connected . novaramedia.com/2026/09/14/g...

It’s a ridiculous bet. Firstly, I don’t see the disaster you’re referring to. Secondly, any downturn in Burnham’s fortunes would make an early election less likely, not more. The only way an election happens next year is if the economy takes off, which currently looks very unlikely.

There should be a fit and proper persons test for political donations above £1000. Obviously, money launderers wouldn’t qualify. Nor should anyone involved in opaque crypto financing, frankly. We have no real idea where their money ultimately comes from, which is the whole point of it.

The idea that there is deep intelligence sharing between the UK and Israel is a myth according to people I know who have been closely involved. For example, Mossad is not considered a trustworthy intelligence partner by MI6. There is little of substance to lose, so no real Israeli leverage anyway.

Obama’s biggest mistake by far was his weak response to the first Russian invasion of Ukraine, which greenlit the second Russian invasion eight years later.

Starmer certainly wasn’t the only problem. It goes deeper than that. The dominant Labour world views have traditionally been right-wing Atlanticism and crude anti-imperialism. Miliband is the first one since Cook to attempt an alternative path, so obviously I like it.
000
David Clark @david-k-clark.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Of course, the sensible thing would be for Labour to use that dividing line to its advantage instead of trying to maintain some vague Atlanticist fudge.

Ed Miliband deserves enormous praise for standing up to the bullying of the Israeli government and its supporters. It’s possible to feel proud of Labour on this issue for the first time in many years.

Yes, I’d read that. Plus various peculiar demands of the US censors, like not having the shooting of Harry Lime shown on screen. The making of the film is a great story in itself, recounted in Charles Drazin’s excellent book.
