The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. We do this through lifeboat search and rescue, lifeguards, water safety education and international interventions.

New cartoon: The RNLI
Cartoon titled “The RNLI: Some of the people they help,” showing six scenarios involving people rescued by the RNLI. Including a man caught by the tide, a YouTuber swimming without preparation, a middle-lane driver, a neighbour with different political opinions, a superyacht owner who forgot to refuel, and people crossing the Channel in a small boat. The final caption reads, “All human beings – all deserve saving.”

Eclipse report. Largely cloudy where I am, but during brief moments saw some amazing crescent patterns from light through trees (pics 1 / 2). Also rays of light in the sky. Colander, masher and strainer were all disappointing so gave up on them - probably user error. .

Yes, I’ve been trying to remember 1999. I think I was in west Wales, it was cloudy, and so colanders (or lack of) became unimportant. I think…

Carry-on spatula not the worst idea. Could be that those of us with colanders will be cursing their lack of long handles.

Good thought. Will now be surveying kitchen for any perforated utensils.

I hear you. Speaking as someone with both one advantage of the colander is that it’s a lot easier to clean between pasta meals / eclipses. A record isn’t that bad an idea - it’ll be early evening so surely can’t cause damage. But the hole might be too big - not sure.

I am told, by those in the know, that the holes in a sieve are not the right kind of holes. Maybe (depending on queues at colander shops) this is the opportunity to up your straining game.

So the ideal would be a finer-holed colander

Dave Walker @davewalker.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
I want to believe that, I really do. I tried to get the paper so it was approximately perpendicular to the rays of light or lined up with the colander, if that makes sense.

Eclipse colander dry run. Sure, I can get a load of blurry dots on my A4 paper (blank). But to think that tomorrow they will be eclipse-shaped blurry dots seems far-fetched. SOMEONE HELP ME WITH SCIENCE
Colander, through which sunlight is shining, making dots on a sheet of A4 paper taped to a board. There’s a suggestion that a man is holding the setup using his hand.

Diagram in which I attempt to explain tactics in a bike race. As found in last week's Diagram Club newsletter, diagramclub.substack.com . Taken from my book 'The Cycling Cartoonist', published by Bloomsbury.
Black-and-white cartoon titled "TACTICS" with five simple diagrams of cyclists in a road race.

In General: Text reads, "You save energy by riding behind someone else," with an arrow pointing to the rider following another cyclist.

In the Bunch: Text reads, "Save your energy." An arrow labeled "Try to be somewhere in here" points to the middle of a tightly packed group of riders, while another arrow labeled "Not here" points to a rider at the back of the group.

In a Breakaway: Four riders are shown in a line. An arrow labeled "Try to be here most of the time" points to the front of the group, and another labeled "Not here" points to the last rider. Below, the caption reads, "(But, if everyone does this, the break won't stay away)."

Chasing the Breakaway: A group of riders is shown. An arrow labeled "Try to be here" points toward the back of the group, while another labeled "Not here" points to the front. Below, the caption reads, "(But, if everyone does this, the break will stay away)."

At the Finish: An arrow labeled "Try to be here" points to a rider crossing the finish line with arms raised in victory. Another arrow labeled "Not here" points to riders still behind.

Really did enjoy 'copper-bottomed, ocean-going twit' I see from his back catalogue he strongly dislikes roundabouts. Assume, not having Telegraph access, he prefers to wait at a traffic light or hope for the best.

Dear Wes, Building safe routes for people to walk and cycle pays for itself five and a half times over though reduction of accidents, taking the strain off the NHS, and many more ways besides. Yours, Dave Walker (Basildon)

In response to comments by Wes Streeting last week:
"Growth was meant to the number one priority, is it still?

There's not enough money for defence, but today the Government announced £4.5 BILLION for walking and cycling."

Why building safe routes to walk and cycle is really good value for money. [From my newsletter: diagramclub.substack.com ]
Black-and-white cartoon titled “Building safe routes to walk and cycle is really good value for money.”
- A children’s drawings of traveling to school suggest they want to walk, but “they can’t because it isn’t safe.”
- An “active travel money machine” illustration states that every £1 invested returns £5.50.
- Benefits include physical activity, thriving high streets, reduced loneliness and improved mental health, road safety, and less pollution. - A section showing different transport options, bus, bicycle, walking, helicopter, and ca, around a person, with label “people need a choice.”
- A pie labeled “roads budget” and a small slice labeled “active travel” illustrate the message that “a fair share goes a long way.”
