Forever prisoners in a private prison in Georgia. Shame on on GEO for inserting capitalism into a function of the state, and shame on the US government for allowing profit off of unending human misery and suffering. I am ashamed my state is associated with it.

It means Christian nationalists, bigots, white males, billionaires, tech bros, farmers, and Fox news watchers need to suffer. Raise gas to double digits, make meat completely unaffordable, and make the big 3 automakers (truck manufacturing) fold due to competition and you might be getting somewhere.

I would wish that you would spend more effort talking about how to get voting rights back for folks that have paid their debt to society instead of worrying about the really low % of voters that are university students, most of whom don't vote anyway. Why bother with the kick down?

By doing transactional, bilateral deals, and starting wars of choice, the US is creating a multi-polar world that is now emerging. It didn't have to be this way.

The PRs have an affinity for the Cubans. I don't think the idea of massive armaments post-use of Vieques as a naval target practice would go how you think it would among the PRs.

Because we invaded them? suppressed them? impoverish them? Because our tourists are ignorant of their situation and sometimes disrespectful? Because they see the whitewash of our unrepentant colonial history and cannot abide it? Just guesses on my part, but it isn't so hard to understand, really.

I have often thought that petroleum supply reductions would only come in response to consumer demand reductions. Clearly, the destruction of Russian and Iranian capacity and the ending of Chinese supply buffering purchases and US SPR releases have changed the situation. apnews.com/article/russ...

We in Georgia would like to point out the drastic upward pricing pressure and technological lock-in that happens with nuclear. I appreciate that academically it reduces portfolio risk, but wow, is nuclear such a bad deal. Over schedule, over budget, & centralized approach only benefits SouthernCo.

They lied about killing Silverio Villegas González in Sept too. They think, with good reason, that it's easier to get away with summary executions of Mexican men. If you were enraged by the executions of Renee Good & Alex Pretti, you should be enraged by the execution of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. 3/3

It wasn't a problem from the 1940s though the 1970s. What changed? My take is that democracy changed. Yes, oligarchs bent it. It is democracy's responsibility (and its citizens) to maintain the guard rails. A strong democracy can and has tamed capitalism, it just has to exercise its power.

Agreed, but when I see citizens here in Georgia who don't know who they are voting for, haven't researched the issues, aren't literate in local politics, and don't spend the time on researching races, it is harder to blame oligarchs and forces us to realize that citizen responsibility is an issue.

I find a lot of anti-capitalists in my circles and my main point to them is that like a coral reef, a balance is needed. Democracy has been weakened, and capitalism has escaped from those small d democratic controls. The root cause of the problem is weak democracy, not strong capitalism.

Some environmental organization should put together a supply destruction hero award for Trump. He will have done more to curtail fossil fuel production and use than any other US president, and deserves to be recognized for his brave stance supporting the resulting economic destruction. More, please!

I wonder if journalism would work better if they simply put out a virtual tip jar. When I read good articles, I am often grateful and would like to reward good journalism. But the ads and subscription pressure feels pushy and seem to not be working as a revenue model. What happened to micropayments?

I want to know where the 2027 Plan and the 2029 Plan are so that Democrats can maximize every single governing minute. There is a lot to do and they have to fix so much broken stuff that it is almost inconceivable. If Rs can publish a plan and implement 90% of it, Democrats could, too.

I liked his comment that the American flag with the blue stripe is a "coward's swastika". the US reignited the Great Game of zero-sum competition. "Reagan ruined everything", but in this case, not just for the US, also Ukraine and the global south. Imagine having: 1) massively slowed CO2 increase 2) democratized energy production 3) maintained the basis for rules-based world order. 8/8

By following through with investments in the technologies the US largely invented, such as batteries, solar panels, and wind turbines, the US could have continued prosperity through a technological revolution. Instead, just like Kodak, the US clearly lost its strategic mind, 5/8

There isn't any other rationale for US to have had the international privileges we have had. By using the government to give petro-billionaires in the US (and elsewhere) one last big juicy profit squeeze, Trump put the last nails in the coffin of US leadership. 4/8

Now that the US/Trump is destroying trade, is destroying fairness, is destroying secure energy flow and non-inflationary pricing, and is destroying institutions that have maintained peace, including the US military, it will only be a matter of time before US loses the privileges this afforded: 2/8

Not a historian, but it seems to me: The world agreed to US hegemony in aftermath of WWII to 1) keep trade fair and open, 2) keep energy flowing smoothly via standardized pricing and security, 3) fair institutions to maintain the peace, including the US military. Research shows diverse boards think and act more clearly and effectively. Take that a step further and we now understand that lack of a variety of viewpoints is really harmful (see cults, Fox addicts, online bubbles, etc.) in addition to the folks in power who need to listen to other points of view.
