Went to the Maryland Renaissance Festival today. Always fun. Somehow I walked away with The Game of Y. I love elegantly simple games you can teach in less than a minute. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y_%28ga...

A small reminder that Colin from Accounts is pretty awesome. Was worried the third (and final) season wouldn't match up to my love of the first two after such a long break, but it continues to be one of the best comedies on television.

All that said. I've certainly invested quite a bit more in my NAS this past year. Paramount selling 49.5% of itself to the Saudis on Thursday, and then magically today the states find a path forward for the merger is more concerning at the moment.

Although I normally rally against this type of thing, I think this news story going around is a bit overblown. Read the actual change. It seems to be mostly for sports and pre-show promotions (which they all do). There's nothing about breaking up shows. consumerrights.wiki/w/Disney%2B_...

Gotta give Lucas credit. Dude got denied by two cities and still built a pretty cool thing.

I liked the Divine Cities trilogy better, but they are all pretty fun reads.

Robert Jackson Bennett is slowly creeping into my favorite Fantasy authors list. Most are good at characters, plot or world-building. He excels at all three. I like that he takes chances in his trilogies and doesn't rest on what made the last novel work.

My flight recorder for MSFS now builds out visualizations for landing approaches and runway rolls. Here's a touch and go where I hit the centerline, then rotate back up into a climb. It polls at a higher Hz when you are under 1000ft, which gives me all the detail. This is pretty neat.

The lack of patience to learn the flexibility of the core is hilarious. People escape their OS when it rots into a hostile anti-user perspective. They then happily install the next distro set up with the same flaws. Just install it yourself, and you'll never have to deal with any of that shit.

I laugh anytime I see something Vim or Linux related that's an "opinionated release". It's pretty much what every new user thinks they want with these tools after discovery. Eventually you realize the power is in the lack of presets, and instead in the ability to configure it yourself.

10 of 30 MLB ballparks. I did my last leg to Cincinnati in a Turbine Duke because getting across to the west coast would be too slow in a Comanche. I'm happy with the flight recorder, but am going to try to build visualizations for my landings, which are still shaky. davesnider.com/ballpark-tour

I was told by my daughter today that no one over 40 can say "nonchalant", which apparently is slang. This got us into a conversation about what "chalant" means, and we learned there is no definition in English. It's an unpaired word like misnomer.

The fun part of that chart is you can see the moment when I was like... "oh no, I need to find a place to land", realized I wouldn't make it, then re-ran through my checklist. Engine kicked back in around 200 ft above the water! Learned a lot on this one.

Had my first emergency on a MSFS flight from Detroit to Cleveland. Over Lake Erie I ran into power loss while in the clouds. I ran through my checklist, but turned on "cabin heat" rather than "carb heat" (i figured it out). Pretty cool that I can feed raw data into Claude to get a report.
Claude breakdown explaining carb heat issueGraph showing a sharp decent during the carb heat issue.

I now have a robust playback system that includes wind-speed and fuel economy. I made horrible time on my flight to Ithaca and wanted to know why. Turns out I was in 20 kts of headwind the whole flight! Also added some climb, cruise and descend metrics. Next up will be measuring bouncy landings.

Built a small tracker to combine my MSFS flights into one map. It tracks my goal to fly over every MLB ballpark. Apparently I can always find something super nerdy to build. I'll put together a separate post on the actual build / scripting side later. davesnider.com/ballpark-tour

4/30 baseball stadiums flown over. Realized with this Mets / Yankees flight that I should get my scripts to auto mark photos taken on the map / chart. It would explain the elevation drops. I'll figure that out for next flight, should be easy since everything is timed.

This is pretty cool now. You can see a short flight I did in MS Flight Sim 2024 with real data coming in. The "checkered" spots are when I was flying through clouds, which somewhat explains the shakiness! I'll write up a blog post at some point: python script pushes sim data to website API.

I'm even hosting all the tile data on my own. Way overbuilt for something I'm sure I'll get bored of quickly.

Yep. That was a very quick test run! It did not. I'm currently trying to fix a driver issue in my rudder / breaking pedals. I have the data for speed / power as well, which would give you the full story :) Pretty cool that I can scoop out all that data though. I just pass it to a worker on my site.

This is unfortunately how my brain works. I haven't even reinstalled the game yet, but I've built all the systems for bubbling up the flight data to my website. Now I just need to add some scripts to my windows box to push real data over.

Heh. Not in my garage, and not a full cockpit, but yeah... I may already have built a sim pit a couple years ago. The biggest issue is that I use it for racing as well, and it's a pain to switch, so I tend to go in spurts of interest twice a year.
010
Dave Snider @davesnider.com · 02/09/2026
Because I like to overdue systems rather than actually do the things, I'm working on how to export SimBrief data to post to my website with the flight path and plan. That way it can sit in my activity feed with nice maps and elevation charts.

Oh no. I'm getting into flight simming again. I tend to get bored without goals, so I think I'm going to do something simple like fly to / from every MLB ballpark in a GA aircraft (likely the Commache, since I already have it).

I still can't get over the Colton Cowser game-saving catch from last night. This alternate angle shows just how insane it was. To get that high, hit the wall, and recover is pretty wild. I'm not sure I've seen one better.

Zero Company seems pretty good after a couple hours. It wears X-Com on its sleeve, but the in between mission stuff is handled much better than something like Midnight Suns, which felt like homework. I wish "hit chance" percentages were subbed with damage bands. Always feels lame to miss.

My guess is that it's more about compacting high volume emails rather than high length emails. I got 11 of them this past week and the school year hasn't started yet. Most of them are ignorable, but then there's always the one you need to read.

This is a bigger deal than it looks because Jason Statham has a cottage industry with these releases. I listened to an episode of The Town podcast recently with a producer who mentioned how Statham doesn't make streaming movies. They all make money in theaters with a big International market.

As much as I’m disappointed in this game, I will watch and enjoy the Orioles as long as Kevin Brown is the announcer. He and Jim Palmer talking about how cereal should come with zip-lock bags is hilarious. “I pay $9 dollars for General Mills and it doesn’t come with a zip-lock bag.” (paraphrasing).
