Ok. The music industry has an AI problem. I'm not anti-AI, but I'm pro-people. I don't ever want a track a person didn't perform to auto-play and infect my recommendations. It's so much more insidious and cynical than AI image gen because you can't opt-out. You support/fund them via auto-play.

🛠️ sbt 2.0.0 is released! sbt 2.0 is a new major series of sbt, based on Scala 3 constructs and Bazel-compatible cache system. many thanks to Scala Center, Anatolii Kmetiuk (new maintainer), Adrien Piquerez (alumni), and other volunteers like Kenji Yoshida eed3si9n.com/sbt-2.0.0 #Scala
a screenshot of sbt session demonstrating sbt run called twice. the first run shows the startup sequence of the sbt server and shows "hello" on screen.

the second run, invoked via "sbt run" shows "hello" again, but in 0s.

Not a new phenomenon, though. Programmers who move into management lose their confidence and fluency, and fall out of date. You don't lose it completely, but I believe most people's abilities diminish if they don't practice.

I am not sure how one enforces this philosophy in which I insist on human connection, particularly with the regard to open source code contributions. No doubt people have thought about it and I just need to go and read up.

davesmith00000 @davesmith00000.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
Example 4: Person makes a code contribution with AI assistance, and puts their name against it. AI value: *Probably* perfectly ok. AI is a tool, a person cared enough to do the work, tried themselves, had a little help, learned some stuff, and put their name on it. That's fine by me.
100
davesmith00000 @davesmith00000.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
Example 3: AI generates a code contribution to a repo. AI value: Less than or equal to zero. No human learned anything. No person to person connection was formed. No-one was invested. All it does is save me from running the LLM myself. Possibly wastes my time reviewing junk code.
100
davesmith00000 @davesmith00000.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
Example 2: A person wrote a blog post, and used AI to make a header image. AI value: Good. Replaces stock photography, which held little value anyway, at least for amateur bloggers paying $1 per image. The creative act was the writing, and the connection was between the reader and the author.
110
davesmith00000 @davesmith00000.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
Example 1: AI generates a piece of art in its entirety. AI value: Zero. I want to share a connection with a human via the medium they chose to express themselves in.
100
davesmith00000 @davesmith00000.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
I do not have a problem with AI, it's a tool. What I find fascinating is that in the case that AI removes the 'human connection', the value of its output, to me, falls to zero, or even less than zero for wasting my time. (We are social creatures, like it or not.)

It's a sign of the times, that whenever a new open source project pops up, I instinctively and cynically check the commit history for evidence that this new library has just been vibe-coded and released into the wild.

Both these statements can be true at the same time: 1. AI slop is a burden for maintainers that were already suffering from burnout. 2. AI use can significantly lower the costs of maintaining open-source software.
