It was a pleasure to meet Dr. Asmeret Berhe @aaberhe.com (former Director of the Office of Science at the Department of Energy) during her visit to @woodwellclimate.bsky.social today. Excellent talk on soil carbon/precipitation shifts, and smart perspective on the future of federal climate science

Insurance is the issue that will force many politicians to deal with climate change. Tune in now to watch my @whitehouse.senate.gov and my colleague Dominick Dusseau speak about "Insurance in the Era of Climate Change," at a congressional briefing hosted by @eesionline.org: www.eesi.org/livecast

"The climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all... A very solid scientific consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing warming of the climatic system." - Laudato Si (2015), from Pope Francis. www.vatican.va/content/fran...

Cold enough on Cape Cod, MA, that when the waves roll back they’re leaving ice on the beach.

NOAA is holding an online briefing about the 2024 Arctic Report Card. January 15 at 4pm ET. Register here: register.gotowebinar.com/register/390...
NOAA’s 2024 Arctic Report Card catalogs how the Arctic continues to warm at a faster rate than the global average and the impact on Arctic tundra transformation from carbon sink to carbon source, declines of previously large inland caribou herds, and increasing winter precipitation. 2024 marks the 10th consecutive year during which Arctic temperatures differed more from long-term averages than warming for the globe overall.

Three Republicans have now voted against Mike Johnson (and have rejected Trump’s endorsement). Quite a statement of independence, Johnson is going to have to negotiate and give some ground to get their votes. Will be interesting to see if this turns into Kevin McCarthy 2.0

There’s been widespread media coverage today of NOAA’s Arctic Report Card — especially the fact that wildfires and warming are turning the region from a carbon sink to a carbon source. Here’s the amazing map that @gfiske.bsky.social prepared for the report, with data from Virkkala et al 2024.

Always appreciate Sen. Ed Markey’s dedication to climate action and his attendance at #COP29 to say that the US will keep moving forward on climate in many ways, even if Trump pulls the country from the Paris Agreement. @edmarkey.bsky.social @markey.senate.gov

Climate finance is the main character at #COP29 so far, and a lack of alignment on the issue is an anchor on multiple tracks. I spent time in the Global Goal on Adaptation negotiations and heard debate over finance from developed nations. Hopeful that a new text tomorrow will bring progress
A full room at COP29 watches climate negotiators fail to make progress.

Scenes & thoughts from day 1 of #COP29. It’s smaller, similar to 6 or 7 years ago. Not a bad thing, a little less circus. Lots of questions about US strategy, post-election. What can be made durable before the US withdraws from the Paris Agreement?

My stay in Baku for #COP29 is off to a rocky start! Got to my hotel room last night to find plastic sheeting on the ground and two hotel employees carrying garbage bags and the mattress out into the hall and bleaching everything.
