🧬 Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome More than flexible joints! Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a group of inherited connective tissue disorders associated with joint instability, stretchy skin, and easy bruising. Features vary by subtype, and joint hypermobility alone does not establish the diagnosis. 🔍 🔗 Link in

I think most orthos are still on Twitter, but if any are here, please fill this out for my friend Dave. It’s a quick survey.

Orthopaedic surgeons increasingly answer for the consequences of decisions they don’t control. “Causal legibility” means transparently mapping out the decision process from inception to execution. This helps surgeons negotiate commensurate decision rights for their stewardship.

If you will fill this out for me and/or send to all your residents, it doesn’t matter if you’re ortho or peds ortho or not. Any doctor or med student can fill it out. I’ll post the results too here.

Need your help. I’m submitting a research survey on meeting preferences to POSNA, and one requirement is that a pilot survey be done first on a test population. I have made it into a pilot survey as a Google form and need 30 people to fill it out. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Agree and it probably won’t get better as AI improves.

I am encouraged by this a little bit, because it leaves room for the effect of agency. But the trait that may eventually prove most valuable could be closer to something like “epistemic curiosity plus calibration” than simply generic open-mindedness.

dave @davembmd.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
But conclusively, the “effect of AI” isn’t just one thing to all people and attempts to dismiss it as such are probably too reductive. Individual differences in how people engage with AI appear to influence the type and magnitude of benefit or harm they obtain from it.

The available research does not establish that only creative people receive the greatest overall benefit from AI, since substantial gains have also been demonstrated among people with lower baseline task performance and across users with different characteristics.

dave @davembmd.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
BUT curiosity without verification can also increase exposure to plausible errors. So AI can create an “illusion of understanding” that can narrow diversity of thought and it’s been reproduced in experimental conditions.

Curious users may be more likely to explore unfamiliar questions, test assumptions, and pursue information beyond the first answer something they memorized and internalized as a central truth. Open-minded users may be more willing to examine evidence that conflicts with their existing beliefs.

dave @davembmd.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Emerging evidence suggests that curiosity, openness to experience, reflection, and accurate calibration of one’s own knowledge can influence how much value people extract from generative AI.

dave @davembmd.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
The “effect of AI” (especially in medicine) isn’t one thing to all people. And the benefit (and/or harm) of AI may not be something we can capture or conceptualize though the metric frameworks we are used to using.

I have set up an agent that scours all my texts, posts, emails, publications, op plans, interactions and AI conversations, identifies patterns in my behavior, and vets the things I’m becoming most dogmatic about against the sum of evidence accounting for the latest literature.

Descartes set forth this maxim in his Principles of Philosophy (1644). He was not proposing permanent skepticism, but rather a methodical doubt to question acquired prejudices and certainties, examining which knowledge could be safely maintained.

Residents: see as many patients as you can during training, and see them attentively. An encounter examined closely early in training teaches lessons that later require many routine encounters to acquire. Early, attentive experience has disproportionate educational yield.

The doorman fallacy is a category error in which a complex human role is reduced to a function, leading to the assumption that it can be replaced with an automated substitute without loss of value, with decision-makers failing to understand the indirect, intangible, non-visible value they provide.

The main thing that makes hospital care veer toward low-quality in 2026 is the institutional idea of embracing physician and nursing team turnover in favor of service line member interchangeability.
