European leaders have been unable to explain why releasing oil reserves just before a risky winter with likely supply disruptions due to the Iran War will help their citizens. They should just be honest: they felt they had no choice but to surrender to 🇺🇸extortion.

Yet again, Europe has surrendered to Trump
Yesterday leaders caved to Trump’s demand that they release Europe’s oil reserves ahead of a risky winter, to lower US energy prices before the midterm election.

🇬🇧PM Andy Burnham has opened the door to the UK rejoining the EU - something he points out is supported by 60% of the British public. But, as 🇫🇷President Macron suggested yesterday, Britain likely couldn't rejoin on the same opt-out terms it had before. How is Brussels reacting?

Mark Carney shied away from talking about any "associate membership" today in the 🇪🇺Parliament, but he did get specific about what he wants: an alliance that goes beyond trade into military, cultural and technological issues. The main goal? Liberation from 🇺🇸 dependence.

Tomorrow, Canadian PM Mark Carney will take the unprecedented step of attending the #SOTEU State of the Union speech in the 🇪🇺Parliament. I spent the past two weeks in Canada asking what people think about joining the EU. Their answers might surprise you.

Canada will never join the EU. But the two should form a defensive alliance against the US
I’ve just returned from Canada, where there was much anticipation for Mark Carney’s speech to the EU Parliament this week. But we need to get real about what is possible.

Meta having to fork out $18bn to US states: is that America being protectionist against its own firm, or is it only considered protectionism when Europeans enforce their laws? Good question to ask the White House.

While Canada takes decisions showing dignity and courage, Europe takes decisions showing insecurity and fear. While Canada’s citizens demand their leaders show self-respect, Europe’s citizens accept their leaders humiliating this continent with their grovelling to Trump. My latest on Substack:

Europeans should learn from Canadian courage
“Do not retaliate and you will be rewarded,” the White House told Europe in April 2025. Our leaders believed the lie. But Mark Carney has understood that appeasement only invites more attacks.

🇮🇹Meloni likes to present herself as a political outsider in the EU. The reality is, these days she's the political centre of gravity. She has🇪🇺Commission wrapped around her finger, as I wrote in February. 🇪🇸Sanchez is the political outsider in the EU. He's the one standing up to our feckless🇪🇺leaders.
open.substack.com
It's Meloni's Europe, and we're just living in it
The Italian PM has pressured the EU into participating in Trump's "Board of Peace" as an observer. Amid a leadership vacuum at the top, Meloni is dictating Europe's Atlanticist right-wing direction.

It has been an extraordinary 24 hours, with tit-for-tat border controls between Spain and Italy resulting in checks in both countries. The fault lies with a 🇪🇺President who has refused to do her job as the guarantor of the Schengen treaty. My take:
davekeating.substack.com
Schengen is unravelling. Where is von der Leyen?
The Commission has for years been letting national capitals play political games with Schengen "temporary" exemptions. Now Sanchez says: 'You want to play games? Let's play games.'

Spain says that if 🇪🇺President von der Leyen isn't willing to take action against Italy's violation of the Schengen code, Spain will. If the checks on travellers from Spain aren't ended within 3 days, 🇪🇸 will take "proportionate measures" against 🇮🇹.
euronews.com
Spain gives Italy two days to lift border checks on Spanish travellers
The government believes Italy's checks on travellers from Spain breach the spirit of Schengen and has given Rome until Sunday to lift them before taking "proportionate measures." #EuropeNews

It appears that EU governments, including Spain, don't want to know what was behind the migrant invasion into #Ceuta last week - because they're afraid where such questions might lead. I discussed with @julienhoez.eu in a Substack Live.

Live from Spain and Brussels: Dave and Julien discuss why EU leaders don't want to know what's behind the Ceuta crisis
Despite evidence pointing toward Moroccan instigation, EU home affairs ministers would not even discuss the idea yesterday - reportedly at Spanish insistence.

Europe's centre-and-far-right leaders chose to use an attack on an EU member state as a chance for cheap political points rather than show solidarity. A stark contrast to how they reacted when migrants were used as weapons against Poland by Belarus/Russia.

Ceuta exposes Europe's chronic lack of unity
An EU member state was attacked, with migrants used as weapons in a seemingly orchestrated manoeuvre. Giorgia Meloni and other leaders across Europe chose to blame the country being attacked.

Sunday long read: EU institutional names and job titles are long-winded and confusing by design - national leaders did not want anything that gives the appearance of a state. But this does a disservice to citizens because it masks what they really are.

🇪🇺President von der Leyen’s proposal to weaken the #EUETS, the bedrock of EU climate action, sends a signal to companies and foreign governments that the Commission will easily cave before EU law might inconvenience them. My piece:
davekeating.substack.com
Faced with US hostility, EU hits the brakes on its climate plans
Today President von der Leyen proposed to massively water down EU emissions trading, the bedrock of Europe's climate policy that was originally meant to partner with a US system.
