Its 3 months because Brexit stops me from staying longer! Then I return to UK for 3 months - compulsory before returning. And whilst here it is hard work fighting to survey against draconian rules for moth permits. Spain want more pollinators - ie moths, but restricts it from happening!

The beautiful Poplar Hawk-moth - Laothoe populi - appears more pink than the normal grey colour, that i see in them back in Britain and maybe this difference is justified by the moth's status, as people call it form iberica, or subspecies iberica, or even a separate iberica species! Yes, Portugal and France etc are doing fantastic things but Spain needs help!? The hobby in Spain is shrinking rapidly and permit restrictions are the biggest problem. A well known scientist in the field and author of many books has been declined this year!

Dave Grundy @davegrundy.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
We are trying to work on it, but permit restrictions are getting more difficult - good moth surveyors are giving up because they have no permit! And I’m now 74, what of the young people who need encouraging. We are moving backwards on this & pressure is needed on the regional government from above!

1 - But the question in Spain is how do we achieve the targets for Red Data Book species, when the number of active moth recorders is so low - particularly in the south in Andalucia where the area is so huge. And this year I am one of only 8 recorders to be allowed a permit.

Next you need to understand moth trapping is more important than life!!?? So, ideal is a moth hut - otherwise known as a garden shed to process moths in. Failing this invest in a large fishing umbrella & process your moths under that - you can sit in comfort with a cup of tea & no soggy notebook!

So, you need to protect your electrics of course from the rain, but in Britain rain happens! The next thing to protect is the moths from the rain. So in the centre of the trap under the funnel, put an absorbent cloth or small drainage holes & maybe a barrier to stop the egg traps touching the cloth

Part 24 - Moth-trapping at - Sierra Nevada, Granada Province, Andalucia, Spain, on 14th August 2026 - moth highlights are - the scarce Commophila nevadensis & much commoner Marbled Beauty - Bryophila domestica - see alt button for photos #teammoth #spanishmoths www.facebook.com/permalink.ph...
One of 4 that I saw at 2.500 metres among scree, rocks and cliffs - probably my favourite Sierra Nevada moth - Commophila nevadensis! It's isolated to only a small area in Spain and is daft enough to live in this imhospitable place! When I trapped these 4, the weather was strong wind, heavy rain and even hail - not ideal for counting moths and photographing them for me - even harder for a tiny moth like this!! - moth-trapping up on the ridge to Pico Veleta, Sierra Nevada, Granada Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 14th of August 2026.Marbled Beauties - Bryophila domestica can be very dark grey or very pale near white in colour, but also can vary to this yellowish form. This is a moth that i share with 2,500 metres in the Sierra Nevada and my urban garden in central Birmingham, England! - moth-trapping up on the ridge to Pico Veleta, Sierra Nevada, Granada Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 14th of August 2026.And the traps were busy and varied in their inhabitants - can you spot any that you know!? - moth-trapping up on the ridge to Pico Veleta, Sierra Nevada, Granada Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 14th of August 2026.
