Loved reading that - thanks

But those taxes to fund renewables may have increased substantially but much of that has been used to build one of the big UK successes of Net Zero - a world leading offshore wind sector. This should not be treated as just a cost, it was an investment as well

I visit many Eng Pri schools each year. The English obsession with phonics is obvious. I know Primary teachers who left teaching as core subjects took up more time. Little time for the arts. The take away, English ed system is getting it right, cd be v wrong. Just look at fall in reading enjoyment!

Excellent. Just leaves me with one question, are other European countries suffering from reduced growth prospects similarly

Creative destruction. If zombie firms are a problem and too many people are still employed in this poorly paid sector. Whilst other sectors have skills shortages, this could continue for a while

They are just very well funded and ill-informed opinions are easy to have. Requires next to no effort in the fact checking department

Do these scenarios include tipping points being crossed?

Love this graphic. Just one hesitation, strictly speaking I think these are yearly averages rather than summer temps. I am sure the overall graph would look pretty similar. Or have I got that wrong.

Is this from Germany? And is it hot summers or spring

Can't see the labelling of this graph. Where is this data from

I'd just have thought you'd put some sort of qualifier to that. And distance yourself from much of what is advocated under that label

Stephen that can be read as if your case is the free marketeers case. Is that how you see yourself?

The irony is she claimed there was no assessment of what we needed energy wise. Presumably unaware of those CCC reports. Now she replaces those with nothing but markets. Even though markets are why UK exports much of our oil and imports oil from much further away

An addiction to power. Short termism is also a bit like adrenaline - I think both play a role?

Ben when you talk of her being praised for her policy on nuclear energy, what are you referring to?

daveevans56.bsky.social @daveevans56.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
That may have been true but as Ben and Jonathan often point out, the size of the long term problem has been known for ages. The unexpected recent stuff merely compounded the problems

My hope is that he shows how foolish going ahead with them is. But frames it first and foremost about economics. A big gamble and almost certainly much larger decommissioning costs in a few years

I think it was the Sunday Times. My mind was also boggled. Apparently it comes down to one editorial just before the election! Murdoch likes his papers to support the party that will be the winners even if it is just for one day!

Answer is absolutely fine from my pov. I can guess why the BBC didn't publish it - linking Trump explicitly with racism. Frightened of litigation. I wonder if they'd have published an answer that suggests 'maybe just possibly maybe' it is to do with their ethnicity (or colour of their skin)!

Most of us are unsure of who to believe on questions like whether we should restart drilling in North Sea. I have some commentators I tend to trust but I can only check that through AI. I don't trust the Telegraph etc. So many untrustworthy sources. Do I trust myself and careful use of AI over them.

I remember one time looking at his position and he was going on about mobile solar - on clothing. It was as if he thought an energy policy that was as quirky as possible would not be copied by anyone else and that constituted a good example of a niche market!

Well I am curious about this... [argue for] North Sea oil exploration (stronger pound, more tax revenue for green transition/public services.) I'd love to see what you mean by this. AFAICS it will make v little difference short term and could mean more significant risks long term!

daveevans56.bsky.social @daveevans56.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
Really interesting. I am curious however as to what steps you would like to see Labour taking, everyone seems to think of a different set of steps

daveevans56.bsky.social @daveevans56.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
It looks to me like the tax elasticity problem. Look at the fantastic amounts of oil and gas that can be taxed and bring in revenue but as soon as you tax these resources significantly the best case production numbers disappear!

daveevans56.bsky.social @daveevans56.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
Very informative - thanks Ben. You may feel it would be too long and contain too many unknowns, but mentioning stranded assets and decommissioning costs, would make it clear that as well as some possible but small upside there are some significant risks
000
daveevans56.bsky.social @daveevans56.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
Surely this is a very optimistic forecast - when you consider who it is coming from!

Why isn't Norway on this map. Surely it is significant

Excellent as ever. The one thing I think you underplay is the Orange Book Lib Dems backing Osborne at the time. It felt like the whole world (the media and even the lib Dems agreed on austerity. Very hard to fight. I was surprised Vince Cable fell in line. Made me doubt my anti austerity stance

But... I heard that building eco towns can be incredibly efficient and effective as it is sorting out all the infrastructure issues in one go rather than ending up with lots bolt ones and work around. Or are both these things true?
000
daveevans56.bsky.social @daveevans56.bsky.social · 26/04/2026
Excellent Ben - very informative. Though I must admit it is at the very fringes of my knowledge. One question - are planning on doing something more about the pension reforms to boost gilt ownership or is there a link to someone else who has explored that issue more fully?

Think Ed Milliband has done quite well but I wish he wouldn't say energy bills will be down £300. I'd like "Can't promise bills will be down in 4 years - many of the biggest factors are outside our control. But we'll do things that put serious downward pressure on bills and make them more secure"

Is this classic short termism. Minimise the risks short and medium term and in the end everyone suffers

Is 'all of the above' absurd because it implies that all can be prioritised at the same time?
000
daveevans56.bsky.social @daveevans56.bsky.social · 11/03/2026
Very informative. Key sentence... "59% of all voters in an accompanying More in Common national poll felt that the “cost of living crisis would never end”. Emphasising cost of living actions doesn't help as many seem temporary fixes. Fixing public sector / tax might feel we were getting somewhere.

I got the impression some of this was intentional. The government wanted to tackle those areas where there lots currently employed but plenty of zombie companies and areas where there are shortages of skilled workers. They wanted more to move towards the jobs of the future. Short term pain but...

I always think the answer to why are cold records (sometimes) being broken if the planet is warming, is well if the hot records are wildly outnumbering the cold records overall the planet is warming. Some surprisingly cold events are still worth looking at. That's my lay person's take!

It's almost like a divorce where no one goes to mediation everyone goes to see you in court. No wonder it costs a fortune
