New-to-me scam: fake accounts stealing the names of artists I've hired on Fiverr and contacting me with sob stories about sick grandmothers. One just wanted money; the other wanted more art commissions, which I assume would have been AI slop. Beware.

A brilliant, witty space opera with incredible alien biology and world-building
Reviewed in Canada on June 28, 2026

Five Stars

Format: Kindle Verified Purchase

Daros is an absolute gem of a sci-fi adventure that manages to balance high-stakes action with a
fantastic sense of humor. The story hits the ground running when an alien invasion completely cripples
the freighter Envy's Price, forcing sixteen-year-old Brecca Vereen to escape in a life pod down to the
planet below while clutching a mysterious, illicit artifact.

What completely steals the show is the dual-perspective storytelling and the brilliant character
dynamics. Brecca's uneasy, banter-filled alliance with Lyra—a delightfully difficult and beautifully
written Vonar artificial intelligence—is worth the price of admission alone. Flipping over to the
perspective of Navigator Frim on the enemy Zeelin warship adds an incredible layer of depth, revealing
a fascinatingly complex, non-human alien society with real biological and cultural logic rather than
just “humans with blue skin." It's fast-paced, uniquely weird, deeply touching, and incredibly smart.

A cool milestone - Kenai reached 500 reviews on Amazon. Interestingly, it is my most-lauded (SPSFC winner) and lowest-rated (4.2) book. I think the sci-fi premise is dense, which makes it a bit of a challenge to get that fifth star.
