Van Dijk will be 35 next season, Jacquet is 21, Leoni is 19 coming off an ACL. Gomez, if he stays, has a 50/50 chance of being fit for any given game. Critical to sign another option, Senesi on a free was appealing but they've lost out

Given the reputation of Liverpool's directors, I'm still holding onto the hope that their big decisions will turn out alright in the end. This team can compete next season with the right changes. Losing Konate doesn't change that, but not replacing him with a reliable option probably does

After Konate's 24/25 season, Liverpool weren't going to sell him on a cut price deal just to get a fee. They probably thought they'd reach an agreement. My guess is Konate wanted Real, then his stock fell and his wage demands didn't. Sometimes it just doesn't work out for either party

Losing Konate isn't terrible. £40m, 183 largely very good games. Not in the top tier of centre backs when you take everything into account, but probably the one below. People will be justifiably annoyed about not getting a fee, but it was an awkward one

Liverpool qualify for the Champions League, their only realistic goal in the PL since about October. Thankfully the season's over, but that performance again underlines how much they have to improve. Good half hour, pretty lifeless the rest of the game. Seen it countless times

This game hasn't even resembled a contest. You could tell in the first 10 minutes that Villa were levels above. Freiburg have got nothing, understandably given the gulf in resources. The best squad in the competition is going to win it, which rarely happens with the Europa

I don't know if I'm being harsh on Konate, but part of me thinks he would have left had Real Madrid/PSG etc made him an offer. His poor form may have forced his hand. Either way, he's a brilliant defender when he's on form, just needs to get better at handling tough moments in games
