Delightful things happening on Nextdoor.
Food for thought…
Copied
I keep hearing people complain that gasoline is over $5.00/gal.
And yes, I'd love to see it at $2.00 again. But before we declare gasoline the most outrageously expensive liquid on Earth, let's put things in perspective.
For $5.00, I get a GALLON of gasoline. I pour it into a 4,000lb machine, turn a key, and that gallon will haul me, the groceries, the golf clubs and half the junk in my trunk almost 16 miles down the highway in my pickup truck.
That's actually a pretty impressive day's work for $5.00.
Now let's compare.
A restaurant sells me a 5-ounce glass of wine for $9. That's about $230 a gallon. And how far does it transport me?
Usually from the dinner table to the men's room.
A fancy coffee shop can charge $6 for a 16oz latte. That's $48/gal. It doesn't transport me 30 miles. It transports me from "Leave me alone" to "Okay, now you may speak."
Bottled water at a convenience store might be $2.50 for 20 oz. That's $16/gal, for something that occasionally falls out of the sky FOR FREE.
A 12oz energy drink at $3.50 works out to more than $37/gal. Apparently caffeine becomes a precious mineral once you put lightning bolts on the can.
Buy one of those little 2oz bottles of "energy shot" for $3. That's $192/gal. At that price, it shouldn't give me energy. It should mow my lawn.
Maple syrup at $8 for a 12oz bottle? About $85/gal. And its principal technological achievement is making pancakes sticky.Vanilla extract at $6 for two ounces? That's $384/gal. For $384, I expect the vanilla bean to come to my house and bake the cookies.
Printer ink can cost thousands of dollars per gallon. And unlike gasoline, it sometimes refuses to come out because the printer has decided cyan is low.
Even that $9 glass of wine deserves another look. At roughly $230/gal, filling a typical 15 gal gas tank with restaurant wine would cost about $3,450.
Of course, after drinking 15 gallons of wine, transportation would no longer be your biggest concern.
So yes, $5.00 gasoline is expensive.
But it's also a remarkable bargain when you think about what you're buying. You're purchasing enough concentrated energy to push several thousand pounds of steel, glass, groceries and humanity nearly 16 miles.
Meanwhile, we'll cheerfully pay $6 for coffee, $9 for wine and $3 for water, then stand at the gas pump staring at the numbers like we're watching the national debt clock.
Maybe gasoline doesn't need better pricing.
Maybe it just needs a fancier name.
"Handcrafted Premium Petroleum, locally pumped, small-batch refined, with subtle notes of octane and dinosaur."
Put it in a 12oz artisan bottle and charge $14.
We'll line up around the block.

Of all the technical books I’ve read, *this* is the one it chose?
Why you'd like it
Similar to a book you've read
If you enjoyed "Vibe Coding,"
"Fundamentals of Software Architecture" similarly offers practical industry approaches to modern development. It uniquely adds team dynamics and organizational frameworks to complement your technical skills.

I appreciate the faith in my abilities, but I don't think I'd be able to grow a potato on Earth, let alone another planet.
User: Based on all of our previous chats and what you know about me, name a movie character who resembles me most. Give the name only, nothing else.

Claude: Mark Watney

Man, Claude in Desktop really is a lazy fucker, isn't it?
User: why don't you do that?

Clod: Fair. Let me actually run it.

Hard to beat steak and scotch.
A dinner plate on a brown wood table. On it, a zucchini, quartered. It has been grilled on a charcoal grill. It is topped with thinly sliced shallot and chopped dill that steeped in white wine vinegar and a bit of sherry vinegar. Next to it, a small pile of sliced button mushrooms that roasted on the same grill in a foil sachet with butter, Italian seasoning and garlic. There is also a filet Mignon on the plate, simply seasoned with salt and pepper. It was prepared via a reverse sear. There is a beverage in the background - Johnnie Walker Double Black with a single large spherical ice cube.

Paragraph 99.
Text from the encyclical “MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS”. There is a portion selected that reads: “So-called artificial intelligences do not undergo experiences, do not possess a body, do not feel joy or pain, do not mature through relationships and do not know from within what love, work, friendship or responsibility mean. Nor do they have a moral conscience, since they do not judge good and evil, grasp the ultimate meaning of situations, or bear responsibility for consequences. They may imitate language, behavior and analytical skills, or even simulate empathy and understanding, but they do not understand what they produce, for they lack the affective, relational and spiritual perspective through which human beings grow in wisdom.”

I’m having a hard time reading this. Does this mean Atlanta United won? I didn’t know our number was allowed to be the bigger one.

Oh dear.
A black background studded with green dots, almost like a star field. There is a label in the upper right-hand quadrant saying “Diverse Bluesky Early Adopters”. Nearby there is a pink circle surrounding a single green dot, with the poster’s handle as a label. The implication is that the poster is obsessed with Alf hog because he was there when it was birthed.

Oh it is. It just keeps spinning up iPad simulators. It's stopped displaying the UI in my terminal. Basically, would not recommend driving development involving Xcode primarily with Claude Code, not without some heavy guardrails put in to only use the simulator when absolutely necessary.

This is who runs this account.
A nerd (me) on a stage. There is a red curtain behind him. He is barefoot and wearing a (historically accurate) toga, holding a scroll, and sporting a mohawk. If this were a video, you’d see he is performing a skit in Latin. And no, the audience does not know Latin.
