What’s a poster you had in your room growing up?
1970's "Building a Rainbow." A bright colored rainbow is under construction, surrounded by workers, scaffolding, cranes, and in the outer frame of the artwork workers are also flying and lowering bits of colors towards the partially constructed rainbow.

At a conference last week in Austin, Texas, exiled Russian journalist Mikhail Rubin told the audience how, in hindsight, there was not enough resistance when press rights began going away in his home country.

"We did not resist for the small things," Rubin said.

After his panel at the International Symposium on Online Journalism, an annual meeting of global journalists, academics and funders, Rubin expanded for me how the Russian government was adept at taking "small steps and normalizing not normal things."

Years ago, he said, independent journalists like him could follow the president around as a reporter in the Kremlin press pool. Then the Kremlin began to choose who could be close to Russian President Vladimir Putin and who got to travel with him. At some point, Rubin said, he was relegated to watching Putin's speeches from the press center, via a broadcast conducted by Putin's personal cameraman.

"The point was to keep independent journalists away from him so we wouldn't ask questions or look around." This, Rubin knew, was not the reporting he wanted to do.

Going to add the text, bc really good point.
Photo quote of Lincoln:

The question recurs, what will satisfy them? Simply this: We must not only let them alone, but we must somehow, convince them that we do let them alone. This, we know by experience, is no easy task. We have been so trying to convince them from the very beginning of our organization, but with no success. In all our platforms and speeches we have constantly protested our purpose to let them alone; but this has had no tendency to convince them. Alike unavailing to convince them, is the fact that they have never detected a man of us in any attempt to disturb them.

These natural, and apparently adequate means all failing, what will convince them? This, and this only: cease to call slavery wrong, and join them in calling it right. And this must be done thoroughly - done in acts as well as in words. Silence will not be tolerated - we must place ourselves avowedly with them.

Headline: Pet Feline Eats Potato
Chips and Watermelon

Text: Boston.-An unusual eat is Marma-duke Shillyshanks, a Dorchester feline who eats watermelon and potato chips and drinks from the goldfish bowl without disturbing the goldfish. Marma-duke, the property of Joseph Gannon, was born in a baby carriage and slept in it until he was old enough to leap to the top of the radio cabinet. There he naps daily, undisturbed by crooners or jazz bands, occasionally rising to take a little water from the nearby goldfish bowl.

I'm a big fan of Billy Bob Thornton, so I hate to dunk on him for his viral clip from Landman. But he claims, "in its 20-year lifespan, la wind turbine] won't offset the carbon footprint of making it."
Link to the video: https://Inkd.in/g_FG8_GN

Jeremy Burleton and I dug into his claim:
1. Wind turbines are made from oil, but not too much. A standard 1.5 MW turbine uses ~30 barrels of oil for resin to make carbon fiber and other plastics that emit 15-20 tonnes of CO2.
2. The most carbon intensive component is the steel and concrete. Another ~230 tonnes are emitted from making the bones of the structure with steelmaking and concrete production.
3. In total, that comes to ~250 tonnes of CO2 emitted.

What's avoided?
A 1.5-MW turbine operating 30% of the time for 20 years that displaces natural gas will avoid ~40,000 tonnes of CO2. That's ~160x more than what's emitted from building and operating it. Said another way, wind turbines have a carbon payback period of ~2 months.

The large installation on the façade of the Gardner is on Evans Way. It’s dedicated to commissioning and rotating new site-specific works from the Artist-in-Residence program since 2012. The fabric scrim serves as an outdoor canvas that extends the gallery space beyond the Museum's interior walls and serves as public art in the city of Boston.Excerpt from the label —
