A lot of activities are designed around the assumption that everyone is neurotypical, perfectly healthy and mobile, and can eat anything without issue. It certainly takes work to design activities that are inclusive and build trust, but it's worth it.

Accessible and Inclusive Events
Ah yes, anonymous desserts that contain none of the usual allergens. So tasty. Good luck if you are allergic to anything not in that list. A funny thing happens when you have dietary or accessibility needs at conferences and events - too many bad experiences can leave you a little defensive. A few weeks ago that defensiveness saved me from getting an accidental (and potentially very unpleasant) dose of gluten, as I noticed that serving utensils were happily being swapped between gluten and gluten free foods, meaning the gluten free foods were no longer reliably gluten free.

Embrace the Process
In an effort to combat the inappropriate use of AI in schools, the NSW Government is restricting the percentage of marks that HSC students can get from take home assignments. This announcement has largely been well received. However, it also highlights a systemic problem in the education system. Students are so willing to hand their learning over to an AI because they have been taught that the goal of school is to get a good mark.

Every day we butt heads with technology in a myriad of ways, some tiny, some huge. All of them take their toll. Technology should be a wondrous boon! This episode of Make Me Data Literate is a super interesting chat with Associate Professor Karen Lamb about biostatistics, rigorous experiment design, the human side of statistics and more. "Because to me the whole thing is statistics. If it doesn't work from the start, if the design isn't right, then there's no point in me having a nice, beautiful sample size calculation.

A wonderful conversation about how social media works, and the humanity of data. Check it out! "Data is man made. This is something that we need to stress, especially in the age of generative AI. You know, even for a pedestrian who is listening in who may not be very well versed in social media, you probably have the experience of now opening a browser or a search engine, trying to look for information, but before you even get your search results, there is an automated AI version that claims to be a summary of everything you need, saving you time in scrolling and clicking.

The organization focuses on helping individuals and teams use data science methods to solve real problems and avoid biases like confirmation bias when interpreting information?

This is a brilliant @lindamciver.adsei.org post summarising her experience with a doctor using AI summaries for notes. Look at all the stuff the doctor got wrong - absolutely mind blowing: adsei.org/2026/03/24/h...
The rest of the appointment went fine. Many things were discussed, he took a very detailed history, and seemed nicely thorough. He said he’d send me through a summary of our discussion, after he had checked it. A day or two later the summary arrived. It was superficially ok, unless you knew my history and checked any of the details. Glancing at it was enough to show me that there were problems, so I went through it carefully and counted at least 9 significant errors. Among other things, it had described me taking medications I am not on for issues I don’t have, left off medications I actually am on for issues I do have, altered the number of pregnancies I had experienced, and left off things from my medical history that were not only covered in the appointment, but also listed in the referral letter, and, more importantly, relevant to the issues I was seeing him for.
