peter flook's last recorded talk is now live. he gave it at our sydney data eng meetup on april 15, just days before he passed away. "data contracts that actually work" — the open data contract standard, why schemas alone aren't enough, and how to make contracts enforceable in real pipelines.

Sad news from the sydney data engineering community. Peter Flook, founder of data catering and a genuinely wonderful practitioner, passed away suddenly on the weekend after collapsing during a soccer match.

welcoming velodb to dataengbytes 2026 sydney 🎉 built by the original apache doris team — one engine for real-time analytics, search, observability, and ai workloads. they'll be at sydney jul 28–29. come talk to the engineers who actually wrote the code. 🎟 dataengbytes.com/2026/sydney
We're excited to welcome VeloDB as a sponsor of DataEngBytes 2026 Sydney.
If you've worked with Apache Doris, VeloDB is the company built around it — founded by the original creators of the project, with over 70% of their team dedicated to R&D.
Their pitch is architectural consolidation: a single real-time analytics and search database that handles workloads you'd typically run across multiple specialised systems — columnar analytics, log search, lakehouse queries, and vector retrieval for AI applications.
The Apache Doris 4.0 release is worth a look if you haven't already. ByteDance used it to reduce memory for billion-scale vector search from 10TB to 500GB, while improving search relevance from 58% to 94%. The VeloDB team will be at DataEngBytes Sydney (Jul 28–29) — come talk to the engineers who built it.

DataEngBytes 2026 is filling up — and for good reason. In a conference landscape full of vendor-sponsored content and polished sales pitches disguised as talks, DataEngBytes is something different: a genuine practitioner community sharing real work, real failures, and real lessons.

"Software Development Now Costs Less Than Minimum Wage"
$10.42/hr. Less than a burger flipper earns. He's been in the weeds on this for over a year — Ralph/Claude loops, VC conversations, model-first companies — and he's bringing all of it to Auckland.
If you're a data engineer wondering what AI actually means for your career, this is the talk.

Town Halls are where the real value is at conferences. Keynotes are polished marketing; town halls are where you hear 'we tried X and it failed miserably' or 'here's the workaround nobody documents.' The honest conversations about failed migrations are worth 10x the success stories.

Hot take: the best conference moment isn't a keynote. It's a room full of practitioners being honest about what's actually happening in the industry. We're bringing Town Halls to DataEngBytes 2026 — and we need your help to shape them. Survey dropping soon. What's on your mind? 👇 #DataEngineering

Apparently, there is "too much cheering" and "too much saving" going on in the Data Engineering community right now. He is demanding that you STOP buying these bargain tickets immediately.
