Really think about that. Right away, from the first interaction, one player has learned how to land a hit, and the other player has learned that they cannot trust the controls. Those are two VASTLY DIFFERENT LESSONS from the same brief, initial interaction.

What would happen? Naturally, one of them would hit the other, and the other person's input seemingly went into the ether. And while their character is reeling, the hit person probably pressed the button again. And again. And again until they managed to make the character do something.

Let's go back to that "Button Bashers" misnomer and make it plain with a hard truth. People call them "Button Bashers" BECAUSE THEY FEEL LIKE ASS TO PLAY WHEN YOU FIRST GET YOUR HANDS ON THEM. Does button bashing seem like the behavior of someone who trusts that their inputs will be honored?

I look at Fighting Games, and I see so much potential that just isn't being played around with. Like, at all. It's difficult to explain because everyone I've attempted to talk about it with has either dismissed me outright, called me mad, or didn't understand what the fuck I was talking about.

And a horse can only be bred to be so fast. It doesn't really help that the FGC keeps asking for faster horses. But, I'll get to those folks some other time, because Fighting Games is a genre failed not only by its developers, but also its primary audience... who turn into developers.

We should want fighting games made by people who like the games for what they could be. There's little actual VISION in Fighting Games. And it's a real shame. Henry Ford had a quote about people asking for faster horses, and fighting game developers have just been breeding faster horses.

Even further: As things currently stand, fighting games are only really made by people who love Fighting Games AS THEY ARE. The result is years of incestuous systems piled together not out of genuine consideration, but because certain things are taken as facts of the genre.

I'm gonna take this further: If you hate the fact that AND don't understand why normies would call fighting games "button bashers," you don't stand a chance at taking the genre out of niche status. There are hard truths about Fighting Games that the people who love them are not ready to hear.

THIS. I’ve been saying this for years: Fighting Games won’t stand a chance at getting out of niche status until fighting games are made by people who actually take the time to understand normies instead of just dismissing their problems with the genre. You cannot serve Gods Garden and Mammon.

Sorry but I've spent the last several years hearing high level pro fighting game players say "I know why people don't play fighters" and 9 times out of 10 I just think "Have you ever actually spoken to a non fighting game player? They're pretty clear on their reasons."
