I’ve been told this is where all the writers from X went… Is this true? I’VE MISSED YOU ALL SO MUCH!

Working on my travel version chart of who is betraying who is betraying who and why in my new WIP… #amwriting (kinda)
Super complicated character motivation chart

The earliest stage of a writing project for me is listening to the MCs having out of context conversations in my head: “If you’ve gotta be fucking FREEZING, there’s no better place to be fucking freezing than Cleveland.” “You haven’t had a real good time ‘til you’ve seen the back of an ambulance.”

I don’t really have a separate muse. I fall at least a little in love with all my MCs and they are my muse for their story. I’m totally obsessed with getting in their heads and hearing them talk. #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat … this. whatever this is. BUT THEN THE CHARACTERS DO WHATEVER THE F*** THEY WANT ANYWAY. so rude.
Plot wall. String in a plot arch shape with LOTS of sticky notes.

This is a weird answer for #HorrorWritersChat but, honesty? My MCs fell in love too quickly. The reader was supposed to be on board with one MC thinking the other was, and I quote, ‘a psychotic, murderous bitch’ but then all of a sudden it was, ‘Nooo. She’s so PRETTY.’ Rogue character shenanigans…

Helloooo #HorrorWritersChat. Daryn. Currently in the nerve wracking phase of a new WIP where, no matter what I do, it always seems to take three months for a new idea to just percolate. But… Dragons (I know. I swear they’re different.) Finders Keepers Nuns Cardiectomy Cats

#HorrorWritersChat YOU WANT THEM TO BE KIND TOO?! Well, the current MC literally saves a cat early on. Last MC was kind but wary. Didn’t trust easily, but gave her cardigan to ladies with a chill. Decapitated a werewolf to save her LI. All those small touches to show she cares…

#HorrorWritersChat It has been so long! Daryn. I write mostly murder mysteries, dark fantasy and horror. Always a dash of absurdism. I want to have my next WIP plotted out by the end of the year. Considering I’m worldbuilding back to the formation of the planet, I think that’s enough…

How to write a book: - pick a time each day - write a little bit - write a little more - write more - keep writing - oh god it’s just more writing isn’t it - the writing never stops - this is your life now - you asked for this, you mental crouton - all is pain - snack break

For #FantasyIndiesSpooktober Saturday Snippet, a bit late, this little gem from yesterday’s writing session…
She senses word might have spread regarding Tuesday and the Slaying of the Insane Fucking Grizzly Bear, because multiple students stop to stare at her as she walks towards the circulation desk in the library, and Tuesday suspects it's not because she looks particularly alluring today.
It is impossible to color coordinate with the hospital leg brace and she can't raise her right hand high enough to do her makeup properly.

Hi, #FantasyIndiesSpooktober! For Free Friday… I described a Bed and Breakfast house like a biiiiiig spider today in my spooky WIP…
The Lodge looks more like a giant black spider than ever in the gloom, in the rain, in the night. Even with the headlights sweeping ahead, Tuesday can hardly distinguish the long limbs of rooms from the cephalothorax of the living and dining rooms, from the abdomen of the kitchen at the back. The windows in some of the front rooms could be the eyes, Tuesday thinks blandly. There are eight, though only a few are lit right now. The front porch, with the extensions on either side of the circle drive, are the chelicerae - the mouthparts.

I can’t lie to you #FantasyIndiesSpooktober friends… I haven’t been listening to spooky music while I write this WIP. Kodaline has been representing MC’s vibe in my head, while Mumford & Sons has represented LI. A little Lord Huron mixed in occasionally.

Well, shit. Writing I can do, but if I have to cultivate the mystique of celebrity to sell books… Regular inside peeks into my life and personality are probably about as interesting as watching a shuffleboard tournament. (I’be actually never watched shuffleboard. Maybe it’s fascinating.) #author

Oh, #FantasyIndiesSpooktober… So many, but a few are twiiiiiiiiiisty so I can only tell you werewolves, werewolves, a couple of other werewolves, oh, yeah, and that one particular werewolf. Also a witch, or two, or maybe three. Or possibly four. It is hard to tell for sure until the very, very end.

Weirdly, for the first time pretty much ever, my current MC doesn’t wax poetic in long paragraphs on food, #FantasyIndiesSpooktober friends. I think her favorite ‘treats’ are probably more things like travel, high end skincare products, maybe clothes… She’s my first Fancy Pants MC…

In short, #FantasyIndiesSpooktober, the answer is: Not well. She snaps at the people she cares about when she’s scared. Usually because she’s scared something bad is going to happen to THEM, not necessarily scared for herself. Luckily, LI finds it kinda endearing.

If Geraldine came to life I would beg her to marry me and we’d run away to Pulpit Rock in Norway for a destination wedding (she describes this dream in her story). I’d totally BASE jump off a cliff in Norway after the ceremony for the woman of my dreams. #HorrorWritersChat

I am also a horrible screenwriter so I don’t think writing the script would result in the best movie. And I would want the best adaptation possible. I spend a lot of time in my characters’ minds in my novels so I have a hard time writing only what you can hear and see on screen. #HorrorWritersChat

I’m never consciously adding elements, but there’s often emotional repression, poor self confidence, & lots of literary references. Not that these things reflect elements of my own character. Also, always a tall woman somewhere. Not that I have a THING for tall women or anything. #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat Daryn and I write horror, dark fantasy, black comedy and murder mysteries. All with a generous dash of absurdism. My Halloween costume is… honestly? A giraffe onsie. My nephew is obsessed and I. am. a. rockstar when I wear that thing. My dog comes along with a skeleton hoodie.

For #FantasyIndiesSpooktober I have created… a WIP aesthetic. Just for you. Did I get the creepy vibe about right? Werewolves and witches and zombies and overly friendly fellow B&B guests. It is a very. scary story.

MC Phobias for #FantasyIndiesSpooktober I have to admit, so far my MC has faced serial killers, werewolves, dour hoteliers, small talk with overeager strangers and dark magic rituals and the thing that seems to scare her the most is developing a genuine affection for her LI.

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober I’m sad the ducks are dead. Alas.
Riley is crying so hard now she can’t breathe, gasping and coughing in between her great, big wailing cries of grief. She’s lost her sense of disgust to that grief, and she’s gathered the bloody carcasses, as many pieces as she can, all piled up in her lap, clutching at the one discernable head, pressing the little yellow bill to her chest. The blood is dried and brown. The bodies smell rotten. This wasn’t recent. A few days at least.

For #FantasyIndiesSpooktober Free Friday, confessions about my WIP: Lucy and Ethel just died. Like, ripped to pieces died. Not even I am sure exactly how many werewolves live in this town. In the past 50 pgs I have referenced: LOTRs, the Malleus Maleficarum and the Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober Honestly, I love my current MC, but she’s a little snooty and uptight, and I can’t see her dressing up for a Halloween party. Last MC though, she actually put on a masquerade on page and she dressed up as Anna Pigeon. (And if you know who that is, we should be friends.)

#HorrorWritersChat Kinda cheating that I have a MC who’s a rescue worker and a medium, so… She can talk to the ghosts and patch me up if we get into a physical confrontation. She’s signed onto a reality TV show contract though, so the whole thing might be televised… Not sure how I feel about that.

Horror-comedy. I know I cheated with a hyphenated compound word. Shhhhh. But that’s all I’m capable of writing. I NEED some chuckles to break up the tension of the scary bits. Think drunk Agatha Christie writing Zomboat! as an amateur sleuth whodunnit. #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat Forgot the tag on the first one. Ya’ll are going to miss out on an awesome WIP description. I often work out plot issues on hikes with my dog. Year-round, but fall is my favorite season. Like to go early in the morning when it’s quite and the fog is just burning off the fields.

Always going to be super late to this because I just left work. Hope that’s okay? Daryn. “Look, I... I may not be an explorer or an adventurer, or a treasure-seeker or a gunfighter… but I am proud of what I am.” WIP: There may be werewolves, witches, poltergeists & serial killers. Or maybe not.

And for day two of #FantasyIndiesSpooktober, I present to you a snippet from Maybe Killer Werewolves Or Maybe Just Regular Human Killers WIP:
Tuesday can’t see any of the stars, can barely distinguish dark sky from dark leaves reaching out from every side, snagging cloth and scratching her skin on occasion when her feet have trouble finding the blacktop amidst all the other impenetrable black. She’s too scared to walk in the middle of the road, though the yellow line is at least discernable in the dark. But the blind turns. The drunks driving tow trucks up and down these mountain roads in the middle of the night…
And yet, the woods. Tuesday is all but certain there aren’t any werewolves, but regular old grey wolves can weigh a hundred and eighty pounds and they are fully vicious enough to rip a victim limb from limb. Just like Alexia was found scattered far and wide. So too might Tuesday be found a few days from now if she walks too close to the edges of the road. If the next sharp thing to snag her skin is teeth, instead of trees.
