A new Lifer to add to the list, a Scarlet Tanager (Piranga olivacea) stopped by for a quick snack this morning. Yay!!!! #birds #lifer #scarlettanager

A poorly taken photo of a Scarlet Tanager visiting one of our feeder stations. This is the first one I've ever seen, let alone in my backyard. I know they visit our general area, so it was easy to identify. That bright red is freaking BRIGHT RED. A lovely contrast with the green grass on a rainy spring morning. Have yourself a wonderful day!

The imprint of a Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) after grabbing a peanut snack from atop the fresh snow. #birds

A photo (not poorly taken because it was taken by my wife) of the impression in the snow left by a Blue Jay after it swooped in for a peanut. Above the cool imprint of the Blue Jay are the tracks of a different bird that had been hopping around in the snow earlier. The boots visible in the bottom of the photo are those of my beautiful and wonderful wife. I hope you have a beautiful and wonderful day!!

A male Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus) visiting my feeders this morning. Snacks were acquired, and then he flew off. #birds

A poorly taken photo of an Eastern Towhee seeking snacks on a backyard deck. The deck has been stripped of its old stain, but still needs to be sanded and given a fresh coat of stain. But enough about the deck, this bird is not a regular visitor. I think this is only the third time I've seen one in the 22 years I've lived in this house. First time getting a decent picture of him. Nice way to start my day. I hope you have a great day, too!!

Instead of having guitars that kinda sound like a Strat, I finally own the real deal. An American Professional II in the Mercury finish. My gift from Guitar Center for 20 years of employment with the company. Thanks, GC!!! #guitars #fender #rockandroll #gratefuldead

A photo of a Fender Stratocaster on a couch. The guitar is silver in color (Fender calls the finish "Mercury "), and the couch is a light tan with brown blankets covering the seat cushions. Gray throw pillows rest on the back of the couch. A Grateful Dead themed guitar strap completes the vibe. May good vibes come your way today, friends!!

A Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) enjoying a sugary drink on a lovely summer afternoon. I'm enjoying playing guitar out on the deck. This feeder, by the way, is so easy to clean. It's a small mason jar style feeder. I highly recommend it. #birds #hummingbirds

A poorly taken photo of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird taking a nice, long sip from a small mason jar style hummingbird feeder. Despite having very little rain recently, the trees are still quite green in the background. Next to the feeder hangs a swing designed for the hummingbirds to rest upon. The Downy Woodpeckers will also use it. Silly woodpeckers. Sips are for hummingbirds. Anyway, have a fantastic day!!

An adult Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) feeding a young one this morning at dawn. Yes, my bird pics are poorly taken. 😀 #birds

A poorly taken photo of a pair of Song Sparrows on a backyard deck. The adult on the right is feeding the juvenile on the left. The younger bird's beak is slightly open, and it looks a little blurry because its wings are doing that rapid flappy thing that young birds do when they want to be fed. As it's mid-August, I'm wondering if this is a second brood child. I was a second child also. Anyways... the deck is finally stripped of the old stain and is ready for a new coat of stain. I could use a new coat for winter, but let's not hurry to get there. I'm still enjoying summer. I hope you enjoy your day!!!

Out of site and hidden deep in the brush below, a Gray Catbird hollers an alarm call. MEOWWWW!!! MEOWWWW!!! No snacks were found for the hawk. I hope that you are able to find snacks today. Ms House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) greets you on a hazy summer day that also happens to be my 20th wedding anniversary. 20 years. Wow. #birds

A poorly taken photo of a female House Finch next to a metal silhouette of a bird that tops a pole from which we hang a bird feeder. The off colored sky in the background is due to distant wildfire smoke. The trees remain green, which is very nice considering the drought we had last year. Today is my 20th anniversary with my wife, Cindie, so I expect you to spread love and joy to those around you. If they ask why, just blame me and the wife. Have a great day!!

A poorly taken photo of a wet Gray Catbird on the corner of the hand rails of a backyard deck. It rained all night, so everything is wet. Hidden in the grass behind the Catbird is a Common Grackle, and a tiny little blur in the upper left corner of the picture is a House Sparrow flying away. Birds are cool, and so are you. I couldn't decide which photo to post, so here's two that were taken moments apart. A Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) and a European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) posing for the camera and giving me the side eye. #birds

A poorly taken photo of a Blue Jay on a small branch of a young crabapple tree. The bird is looking to the right as it shows off its beautiful feathers, wings tucked to the back, white tips on the wings and tail. A rustic fence can be seen in the background. An upside down wheelbarrow creates a V with the branch the bird sits upon. If I knew what I was doing as a photographer, that would have been on purpose for artistic effect. Most of my good art is accidental anyway, but that doesn't mean that it isn't still good art. Have a great day!!!

One of our local juvenile Red-tailed Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) caught a small ground rodent yesterday. I'm not sure if it was the first successful predation, but it has definitely learned that we have snacks in our yard. Here it is this morning looking for more snacks. #birds #hawks

A poorly taken photo of a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk perched on a small branch of a maple tree. The bright green leaves contrast nicely with the deep blue sky. The bird's beak is slightly open as it looks down and to its right (our left) for potential snacks. The little birds below are hiding and letting out warning calls. I'm hoping that it won't poop on me while I'm underneath trying to take pictures. I hope you don't get pooped on, either. Have a wonderful day!

A pair of House Finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) joined a pair of American Goldfinches (Carduelis tristis) for a morning snack. A Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) tried to get in on the fun, but the finches weren't having that. #birds #finches

A pair of House Finches and a pair of American Goldfinches enjoying breakfast snacks together in a green plastic bird bath that we turned into a bird feeder. 4 bird baths are enough. 5 is just silly. Not that silly is bad. I relish in my own silliness often. Anyway, back to describing the picture. The bird bath/feeder is on a backyard deck that has been partially prepped for a new coat of stain. I'll eventually finish that chore if we eventually get a weekend where it isn't deadly hot or pouring rain. Did I get distracted from the photo description again? Not seen in the picture is that the bird bath/feeder is under an awning so that the snacking birds don't become easy snacks themselves. The hawks around here are relentless. And always hungry, it seems. So.... today's theme is to be silly and relentless. Have fun!!

A poorly taken photo of a pair of male American Goldfinches on opposite sides of a cylindrical bird feeder. Red, purple, and yellow flowers are seen below the birds. Tall green weeds are in the background. Those weeds are nothing compared to the jungle of weeds in the same place last year. Nevertheless, I still have to try and remove more this coming fall. We'd like to plant more native flora and fauna for the pollinators. Hurray for pollinators!!! And, hurray for you!!! Have a wonderful day!

A juvenile Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) trying to figure out the whole hunting for snacks thing. It just learned that power lines are not easy to land on. It was super funny watching it swing back and forth, wings flapping until it achieved the balance point. #birds #hawks

A poorly taken photo of a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk perched on a power line. More power lines (and cable and phone lines) can be seen behind the bird. A large pine tree with an undulating trunk is also in the background. That particular tree is one of the tallest along the road and a frequent place for our local predatory birds to look out for snacks. The power line does not usually host larger birds. Small and mid-sized birds all the time, but this may be the first time I've seen a hawk land there. Watching it try to get its balance after landing was very, very funny. Speaking of funny, have some fun today!!

A juvenile Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) chose my backyard for hunting practice recently. No snacks were taken this morning. Better luck next time, friend! #birds #hawks

A poorly taken photo of a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk perched atop a tree in my backyard. The dark green leaves contrast with the light blue sky and white puffy clouds. If you're not familiar with juvenile Red-tailed hawks, they are obnoxiously loud and constantly shrieking. The nest isn't far away. Just across the street and about 100 yards into the woods. My backyard is a favorite place for them to practice hunting. They can be pretty clumsy at first. So can I. Have a great day!!

A poorly taken photo of a Chipping Sparrow on a wooden hand rail of the backyard deck. The rusty crown contrasts nicely with the white eyebrow and black eye line. The deep green of a summer with plenty of rainfall provides the background. I have to confess something. What I refer to as the backyard deck is actually a sideyard deck. I feel much better now. The truth sets us free. I'm still likely going to keep calling it the backyard deck anyway. Have a great day, friends!!

A poorly taken photo of a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird hovering next to a blue hummingbird feeder. His ruby throat is clearly visible, while his wings are a blurry halo flanking his torso. A lovely backdrop of green leaves blocks most of the neighbor's house. "Love thy neighbor" doesn't mean that you have to enjoy looking at their property. A poorly taken photo of a pair of American Goldfinches enjoying an afternoon snack. A young wisteria tree and a white fence are in the background. A poorly taken photo of a juvenile Red-bellied Woodpecker holding onto a branch of a young crabapple tree. Green leaves surround the bird, and a bit of the back neighbor's house can be seen in the background. Not visible is a suet feeder directly under the bird. The young woodpeckers always have a hard time figuring out the best way to land on the suet feeder. The yearly trial and error is quite fun to watch. Eventually, they get it. A poorly taken photo of a male American Goldfinch flying away from a birdbath with a solar powered fountain in the middle. I was trying to get a picture of him at the birdbath, but got this silly photo instead. The bright yellow and black bird provides a nice contrast with the green lawn. A poorly taken photo of a female or juvenile Rose-breasted Grosbeak enjoying snacks from a bird seed feeder tray. The red building behind the bird is my neighbor's garage, which is in need of extensive repair. The roof is covered by a large tarp that was professionally installed by a roofing contractor. A poorly taken photo of a Red-tailed Hawk on top of a gray shingled roof. A smaller bird is seen flying directly down toward the hawk in an effort to make it leave the area. Another small bird also sits on the roof just a few yards away. I think that the smaller birds are Common Grackles. An American Robin had been assisting with the harassment of the hawk but is outside of the photo. The neighborhood squirrels are screaming their alarms. I'm pretty sure that every small critter around is now aware of the hawk's presence. Most of the humans are probably not. Humans, in general, don't pay enough attention to their surroundings.
