"So, how are you settling in?" Grant made sure not to accuse her of anything. Even if she was dodging the rest of the house's inhabitants, doing so wasn't wrong.

"Oh, just fine," Zoey hurried to say. "Everything's been great."

Grant hummed, frowning slightly. "So, you wouldn't say you've been feeling uncomfortable over anything?"

"Of course not!" Zoey assured him. "What reason would I have to be feeling uncomfortable when everyone is being so kind and patient with me?"

"Yes, exactly," Grant murmured. "That's exactly the question I'm wondering. None of us have any expectations for you, but you seem to be waiting for us to voice some."

"Um…" Zoey trailed off, glancing around. Then she admitted, weakly: "I didn't realize any one of you had noticed."

"I can't speak for the others, but I would be very surprised if they hadn't noticed anything at all," Grant confessed.

"Oh no…" Zoey groaned and rubbed her palms on her face.

A new sneak peek at the next Wipe Your Shoes Before Entering update! Jax is being shifty as usual. #theamazingdigitalcircus

Jax made a noncommittal sound and Caine would have squinted at him if he'd had eyes.

"You're going to have to give me something or I'm going to assume you want nothing and will just leave you to your devices," Caine commented.

Eyes meeting his camera for a moment, Jax opened his mouth like he was about to say something. Then his mouth shut and his eyes shifted to a corner, his shoulders hunching. He sighed and ran a hand down his face.

"This would be easier if you could just read my mind," he said.

"What a strange thing to say," Caine said, as he pondered. "Since that's not an ability I've ever had, even in the circus."

Jax pursed his lips.

Caine wanted to bring up Jax's repeated insistence that Caine was manipulating his mind. It felt like a fixation, or a fear, and it seemed that it didn't matter how many times Caine reassured him, it kept popping back up again. But, Caine also knew he wasn't the best at discussing complicated matters, and it seemed that Jax wasn't really listening to anything Caine had to say on the subject anyway.

Another upcoming update to my #theamazingdigitalcircus fanfic!

The point of this tangent was that Jax was correct, always, about what was going on in the circus, even as his "costars" refused to admit it. Jax had been right about the entire attempt at escaping the circus being nothing more than another one of Caine's adventures, and, that was really all evidence needed to prove once and for all that Jax was always right and the rest of the troop should bow down to his superior understanding. They should just bow down to him, period.

When Caine had come to them all, all apologetic and explaining that he didn't understand that they'd literally wanted an exit because there wasn't one, Jax had been on to him immediately. Caine didn't just learn from his mistakes, he didn't improve, he didn't change, and thinking otherwise was just stupid.

So, of course Ragatha and Pomni believed it, idiots that they were. Zooble and Gangle were pretty close to being complete idiots too, but they weren't counting their chickens before they hatched, or their exits before they actually led outside. Kinger was the worst of the lot, actually helping Caine craft this "exit" for them, but, then again, Jax had known since he'd gotten to the circus to not put his faith into Kinger being reasonable.

"So, Caine," Suzie spoke. "Why weren't you allowed to show yourself to me?"

"Isn't it obvious?" Caine asked. When Suzie shook her head in response, he explained: "Because we thought it would be better if Kinger broke the news. None of you liked me."

Suzie winced. "That's a harsh way to put it."

"Is it?" Caine's tone was honestly curious. "It just feels like the truth to me. You didn't hate me, some of you disliked me, but most of you just didn't like me." The A.I. chuckled. "It took me a bit to accept that, that you not liking me just meant that, that it wasn't a personal attack."

Suzie frowned. "I was starting to," she said softly, before steeling herself. "At the circus, near the end. So, I'm glad you're here and not there."

"Really?" Caine's tone was full of wonder, like he'd never considered something like that, someone liking him in the circus. "I had no idea."

"Scratch," Caine cut in before Suzie could voice the question. "And now finish up your breakfasts, you both have a busy day today. Kinger has to go to work and hear what they have to say about the computer's internal timeline, and Suzie has to meet up with her friends and buy me some much-needed ingredients so that I can make you two delicious dinner!"

"Your dinner is already delicious," Grant told the A.I. "You don't need to go all out on our account."

"Good point, but, consider mine," Caine chirped happily. "I like to cook, I like to go all out, I want to cook an amazing dinner for my little lily-pads, and the little lily-pads enjoying it is a nice little bonus."

Suzie snorted at the expression on Grant's face. True, the statement sounded somewhat similar to Caine's attitude about the adventures at the circus, but, if he was directing it at cooking dinner of all things, she mused that it was harmless enough.

"Don't worry, Caine, I won't forget," Suzie told their A.I. "overlord". "Have you written down what you need?"

"Indeed, I have, my dear Ragatha!" Caine pulled a slip of paper off of the notepad attached to fridge and handed it over to Suzie. "That should be all the things we don't have at hand."

"You know, I've been thinking about Caine," Suzie said softly.

Grant glanced briefly at her before focusing on the road again. "Oh?" he queried.

"Yes, I was thinking that it's cruel, to leave him at the circus while the rest of us go on and live our lives," Suzie explained. "I…didn't say anything before because I wasn't sure if anyone would agree with me, but I think you do. Agree, I mean." She kept her hands in her lap, as she twisted the hem of her dress round and round. "Maybe, once we save everyone, we can do something for him. Maybe the company won't need him and…I don't know." She turned her gaze outside.

"Caine is actually a discontinued prototype A.I." Grant suddenly explained.

Suzie blinked in surprise and turned to Grant to listen to his explanation. "The company shouldn't miss him at all, unless they're interested in researching whatever happened with the circus."

"Oh." Suzie blinked her eyes at Grant, then turned her gaze back on the road. "So, do you think we could do it? Just…steal Caine?"

"I know we could do it," Grant said certainly and that certainty made the unpleasant doubt that had curled around Suzie's shoulders finally let up.

"Yeah, okay." Kinger buried his face in his hands and took a few deep breaths. He then straightened himself out. "Thanks, Caine."

"Anytime, majestic hotshot of my heart!" Caine cheered. "Now, how about you take yourself to the kitchen? It's almost dinnertime and I want to make you two a hearty meal!"

"You know you don't need me there to be able to cook, right?" Kinger asked with amusement in his voice. "You haven't needed me ever since we installed those arms for you."

"That would be true, if it weren't for an itty bitty little detail," Caine commented. "You haven't told Ragatha about my presence yet, so, if she walked into the kitchen, hearing sounds of cooking, expecting to see you, only to see the stove cooking by itself, I assume she'd be quite shocked indeed."

Kinger froze. He clamped his hands on top of his head. "Egad! You're right! I still haven't told Suzie about you!"

I completely forgot to post my previews here too instead of just on tumblr! Anyway, I'm currently working on a #theamazingdigitalcircus fanfic, where they all escape the circus!

"Oh, okay." Suzie agreed easily to following Kinger's lead. The man seemed far more balanced now than he had been inside the computer.

By the time she was sitting on the passenger seat of Kinger's car, she'd had some time to process, and figured she could get some easy questions out of the way while they drove.

"Where's everyone else?"

"Living their lives," Kinger replied. He glanced over at Suzie before turning his attention back to the road ahead. "It's 2008."

Suzie sat in silence and processed that information. 2008? Is that why Kinger was here, was he thrown back to 1999 or something? But, wait, that meant Kinger had been waiting for her for nine years.

"Did you wait for me?" she asked.

"Well, I did do other things, it's been nine years," Kinger pointed out. He shot a quick smile at Suzie. "But I never forgot."

Suzie clutched her hands together at her breast. She was so touched. She asked: "What's your name? I'm sorry for not asking before. I'm Suzie."

"Oh." Kinger blinked at the road in surprise. "It's Grant, but you can call me 'Kinger' if you want. I'm used to it."

The statement sounded strange to Suzie. How could Grant be used to being called 'Kinger', if it had been nine years since he'd been called that?

I figured I'd share my #HazbinHotel AU here for everyone. I call it #SwappinHotel, since it's technically a role swap AU (every Hotel resident outside of Charlie changes their role). Here's Charlie (as herself), Alastor (as the Vaggie) and Vaggie (as the Angel Dust)
