I finally got to see No Name on the Bullet (1959). I've wanted to see it for ages. Typically, it has recently appeared on Channel 5, just after I bought it on DVD. It's very good.

A film poster for No Name on the Bullet (1959). There is an illustration of a man in a cowboy hat holding a rifle. To the right, a man is holding a woman in a red top. Below is a smaller inset with a red background. One man bends over a man who has been shot. Behind them, a group of men are gathered, some holding rifles. The film title is at the bottom.

I rather enjoyed The Night Caller (1975) on Prime today. Beautifully shot and some great stunts, but the real winner is 70s Paris. Jean-Paul Belmondo gets the best views from the air, rooftops, street and Metro.

It always takes me by surprise to think I've probably got more albums by The Walkabouts than anyone else. And the last one I bought was in 1997.

I rather enjoyed Green Grow the Rushes (1951) the other day. A satire that felt like Whisky Galore! meets Passport to Pimlico at times. But it made me wonder how many other knock-off Ealing comedies there were at the time?

A film poster for Green Grow the Rushes (1951), with a picture of Honor Blackman and Richard Burton cheek to cheek. The tagline says "an intriguing tale of romance and deception".

Unprecedented times in Film Club tonight, where we discussed Laura (1944) only to discover afterwards that we already did it in 2017. At least it wasn't me who chose it this time.

Film poster for Laura (1944). It is an illustration with Gene Tierney crossing her arms, Dana Andrews in a camel coloured coat and hat, and Vincent Price with a coat draped over his shoulder while holding a shotgun. Laura is written in red letters across the poster.

I was quite excited to find an Alan Rudolph film I hadn't seen before going onto Prime, but it's so bad I'm not even sure I can finish it.

Film poster for Intimate Affairs (2001) featuring Neve Campbell, Dermot Mulroney, Robin Tunney, Terrence Howard and Nick Nolte. There are clouds in a night sky, with a house in the background and a woman standing on a drive in the background.

I received this DVD box set in the post yesterday. I didn't order it, and there was no note inside, but it could only have come from my best friend from the 90s. Leconte was one of our favourite directors at the time, but I have been wary of going back to him somehow. Guess I will now!

The cover of the Patrice Leconte DVD collection. It is an image from The Hairdresser's Husband of a woman in a short sleeved dress with her legs revealed. She is sitting at a shop counter and you can only see the bottom of her face. There is an orange hue to the photo. The other films listed on the cover are Le Parfum D'Yvonne, Monsieur Hire, Ridicule and Tango.

We have more data about ourselves than ever. So why is everything converging on the same? In my new post I use data on high streets, Billboard hits, a million films and my own AI personas to expose the algorithms behind the sameness and how to regulate them. laurenleek.substack.com/p/temperatur...

Temperature Zero for Culture: Why Everything Is Starting to Look the Same

What 640 London shopping streets, 4,000 Billboard hits, a million films and synthetic AI personas tell us about why everything is flattening into sameness and how to regulate the algorithms behind it.

My #LastFourWatched for #LetterboxdFriday have a nice symmetry in my ratings. Started and ended with two corkers with two ok films in between.

My last four films, as recorded on Letterboxd, were Report to the Commissioner (1975), The Golden Spurtle (2025), Home Sweet Home (1973) and Comes a Horseman (1978). There are posters for each film.

With it being Father's Day on what would have been my Dad's birthday, here is a picture of him from the early 1930s looking like he is in a garret on the south bank of the Seine, rather than a miner's terrace house in South Wales.

A picture of my dad in the early 1930s, probably about two years old. He's wearing a yellow beret, a flouncy, maroon polka dot scarf tied in a bow and a knee length coat. He's leaning against a doorway quite nonchalantly.

I made a start on films from World Cup nations I hadn't seen anything from before, with 7 Boxes (2012) from Paraguay on Prime and Diciembres (2018) from Panama on Tubi.

Film poster for 7 Boxes (2012). At the top is a young man looking anxiously towards us with a blurred background. Underneath that is the title in white letters with a black background. Below that is a man pointing a gun with his arm outstretched. At the bottom, the boy is running.

A film poster for Diciembres (2018). Someone is facing away from us, wearing a maroon t-shirt and long green shorts. In front of him are lots of green jungle leaves and foliage. The film title is in white across the middle.
