M27 - The Dumbbell Nebula is a planetary nebula in the constellation Vulpecula, at a distance of about 1360 light-years. It was the first such nebula to be discovered, by Charles Messier in 1764. #astrophotography #deepsky #darksky #asi585mc #cloughjordan
Messier catalogue object 27 is also known as the Dumbbell Nebula due to it's resemblance through an optical telescope. This expanding sphere of ionised gases has striking teal and red hues to it, making it an astrophotographer's favourite target. It hangs in a busy background of stars.

NGC 281 - Pacman Nebula is a bright emission nebula and part of an H II region in the northern constellation of Cassiopeia and is part of the Milky Way's Perseus Spiral Arm. #astrophotography #deepsky #darksky #seestar_s50 #cloughjordan
A rich red nebulosity vaguely resembling the arcade game character, Pacman, hangs in deep space with a scattering of stars in the foreground. Closer inspection reveals vast columns of interstellar dust which hint at the enormous scale of this stellar nursery, many light years across.

The crescent nebula. A pink gaseous blob resembling a cosmic brain hangs in a star-rich part of the Milky Way with red hydrogen-alpha nebulosity in the background. It is formed by a Wolf-Rayet star blowing off layers of its atmosphere at x-ray temperatures.

M27 - dumbell nebula
This sphere of ionised (electrically excited) gas is expanding at a rate of 31kms per second after the collapse of the parent star about 14,500 years ago. It has collapsed to a white dwarf star whose radiation is illuminating the gas by ionisation.

Our sun will probably follow a similar path in 5 or 6 billion years, since it's not big enough to collapse into a black hole.

This time of year (summer) can be frustrating for astrophotography in the northern hemisphere with very short nights, so I'm revisiting old data to try improve the end result.M31 - the Andromeda Galaxy
