Known as 'the foster mother of Christ', Saint Bride is being carried by angels across the Sound of lona in the Inner Hebrides, to Bethlehem. In the distance is the silhouette of lona Abbey. In Celtic mythology Bride corresponds to Brigid, the bringer of light. To evoke this fusion of pagan and Christian symbolism, the angels' gowns feature Celtic knotwork and New Testament scenes. Duncan's inspiration was a story by Fiona Macleod, the pen name of the Scottish writer William Sharp (1855-1905).

James Cowie (1886-1956)

This painting originally featured four pupils of Bellshill Academy near Glasgow. Cowie taught art there until 1935. Despite their proximity the figures appear disconnected, both from each other and their
surroundings. Cowie made detailed studies of the individual elements before arranging the pieces in an imagined landscape setting. This created a strange collage-like effect that was later intensified when Cowie decided to replace one of the girls with the image of an adult woman whose portrait he painted in 1935.

This striking, modernist sculpture represents Estre, a pagan goddess of spring and fertility. The stylised features and highly polished surface reveal Fergusson's engagement with European avant-garde sculpture. It is likely to be a portrait of Margaret Morris, Fergusson's long-term partner. Morris created a dance called Hymn to the Sun with music by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908). Photographs of Morris dancing Hymn to the Sun in 1925 show her wearing a shiny, fitted turban with decorative roundels over her ears.

Pre-Raphaelite artists were fascinated by the complex imagery of the early English poet Edmund Spenser (1552/3-1599). His best-known work The Faerie Queene is an epic chivalric allegory (story with a hidden meaning) dedicated to Elizabeth I. The heroine Una is surprised by a lion which is tamed by her innocence and beauty and becomes her protector. The figure of Una was partially based on a young painter, Alice Boyd of Penkill Castle in south Ayrshire. Scott had recently met her at Newcastle School of Design.

@barbiche.bsky.social @doktorzjivago oj då. det kommer att ta lite tid för att det är BookWyrm som sköter översättningarna, men både “desentraliserad” och “anti-företag” är inte helt rätt så jag ska försöka att fixa det, absolut.
