Computer scientist Margaret Hamilton coined the term “software engineer.” She directed the Software Engineering Division at MIT’s Instrumentation Lab & led development of the on-board flight software for NASA’s Apollo Guidance Computer. She was born #OTD in 1936 & turns 90 today! #WomenInSTEM

Two side-by-side black-and-white photographs of pioneering computer scientist Margaret Hamilton (born August 17, 1936). The left panel features a mature, close-up portrait where Hamilton gazes directly at the viewer with a serene, confident, and reflective expression, framed by her long, dark, slightly silvering hair. The right panel is a famous archival photograph showing a younger Hamilton standing indoors next to a towering stack of bound paper binders containing the Apollo Guidance Computer source code, which she led the development of at MIT. She is smiling broadly and wears a striped, long-sleeved mini dress with dark Mary Jane shoes and glasses, resting her hand proudly on top of the massive column of printed code. The overall composition contrasts her youthful triumph with her enduring legacy, capturing an optimistic, intellectually rigorous mood that highlights her monumental contributions to space exploration.

I spent a whole afternoon one time watching this on my brothers PC 😂

Yes and! It's auto saves on every key stroke to a temp buffer file. If you crash or lose power or what ever, not even a keystroke is lost. Actually saving, writes the buffer to the real file on disk, so that is an explicit action.

Trying to get word out about Hammer, but generating assets is not my forte. So I started making some using #python and Pillow. I was able to share all the styling and colors with my website. This was way better than what I could put together in GIMP. #buildInPublic #writingCommunity

Smarter! I hope 😁 When you edit a scene I take a pre-edit hash. When you sync I compare with the server hash, if they match, I know that server doesn't have any edits you haven't seen. That local copy simply uploads. If they don't match, the client presents UI allowing you to resolve the conflict.

This is extremely bad news. This is one of the legal protections I talked about in my @2600.com article. This highlights The need for technical solutions to what should be purely legal problems. SnapSafe is designed to protect your photos in exactly this scenario. snapsafe.org #privacy

Redesigned my main darkrockstudios.com site, not a huge change, but looks a bit more modern now I think. I tried to add some subtle motion design to make it feel less static. #opensource #css #webdesign #webdevelopment #graphicdesign #buildinpublic

I made an #android app to view C2PA data in photos. C2PA is not a silver bullet for disinformation, but it may end up being an important tool. Being able to assert with some certainty if a photo was taken with a real camera, and not edited with AI after capture. github.com/Darkrock-Stu... #ai

Hate to say it, but I think Linus is right. I'm pretty against AI for creative work. But as a Software Engineering tool, it's here to stay. The work now is developing tools and workflows to do serious engineering with it instead of vibe coding. arstechnica.com/ai/2026/07/l... #linux #ai

Last year I was concerned with how photos on peoples devices were used against them by governments. So I built SnapSafe: A #FOSS camera app with no internet permission. It encrypts photos locally and never sends anything anywhere. snapsafe.org youtu.be/Ihp8C_cCkoE #privacy #opensource #encryption

I think Free and Open Source development is an unalloyed good in the world. It fills niches that commercial development can't justify. It provides auditable code to protect privacy and security. I make #FOSS end-user applications. Follow along, and let's build something great! discord.gg/jS6tVtaUU
