More precisely, this position, inspired by an analysis of early Heideggerian phenomenology and modern-day neuroscience, positions the formal-temporal dimension of the normativity of unreflective skilled action as more fundamental [...]

This paper claims that the normative dimension of unreflective skilled action ought to be understood too in terms of a formal temporality, according to which an unreflective skilled action is adequate iff it fulfils the subdoxastic preferences of the acting agent. [...]

Abstract: It has been recently proposed that our evaluations of the relative adequacy of unreflective skilled action ought to be grounded in sociocultural normativities; that is, with respect to what is standardly done according to general practice or custom. [...]

In its place, we offer a predictive processing theory of passage of time judgments based on "error dynamics", according to which the sense of time moving quickly is grounded in the cognitive system’s subdoxastic detection that it is minimising prediction error at a faster rate than it expected. ...

A prima facie promising account of passage of time judgments derives from the predictive processing framework. More precisely, Hohwy et al. (2016) propose that the reported speed of the experienced passage of time is a function of how rapidly the perceptual system ...

Thanks! I have lined up to read a bunch of papers, including this one, which — I have been told — relate to the question of how to individuate LLMs. Am curious to see if there’s anything more specific on persistence, but perhaps these papers will address that.

Anyone know of any philosophical work looking at whether large language models persist through time? Preferably beyond (although not necessarily excluding) considerations of memory.

'The Idealized Mind: From Model-based Science to Cognitive Science' published by MIT Press. Claims: models of the mind are idealized models; this is consistent with scientific realism; yet, it blocks realism about neural representation and neural computation based on evidence from neuroscience.
Book cover for The Idealized Mind with the MIT Press, published in 2025. The image, created by my friend Chris Vernon, is a simplified artificial neural network (ANN). The fact that this ANN looks nothing like a real neural network is the picture developed in the book with implications for discussions about neural representation, neural computation and explanatory unification in the computational cognitive sciences
