Meta-Realistic Excavations of Female Film Stardom
Actors have always drawn on elements of internal experience or life story, but a recent wave of films featuring iconic female stars consciously elides the space between performance & subjectivity.

Interpretation is not simply a mysterious act of insight, where the critic gazes at the film and the truth obediently reveals itself.

David Bordwell’s Making Meaning is a key text I draw from. A book that asks us to think not only about what films mean, but also about how critics produce meaning. This is the crucial distinction.

In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, subjects are bound in darkness, mistaking shadows cast on the wall for reality. For Baudry, cinema replicates this illusion: the projected image stands in for the world, and the spectator takes this illusion as real. dariollinares.substack.com/p/what-is-ps...

RIP Béla Tarr (1955-2026) If you want to know where to begin, I strongly recommend Werckmeister Harmonies (2000), a cosmic nightmare that’s nominally about a travelling stuffed whale exhibit, but also about civilisation eating itself, the death drive & the dark forces unleashed by authoritarianism.

Could cinemas fill a gap in film education left by the universities? Making a long term commitment to a future film-going audience could sustain cinema's own viability.
