Beyond the disgraceful child sexual abuse charges that ended his career, Hastert also laid the foundation for the modern GOP‘s absolute fecklessness:
Hastert’s most enduring legislative legacy, however, is the notorious “Hastert rule”—the diktat that no legislation would proceed to a floor vote unless it already won the support of the House GOP conference. This might seem like the wonky, technocratic innovation of a former deputy whip, but in reality, it cemented the 21st-century GOP’s reputation for enforcing ideological orthodoxy at all costs—at the direct expense of the negotiations, compromises, and legislative conferencing that made up what House leaders had dubbed, in a show of optimism, “regular order.” As longtime congressional scholar Norm Ornstein writes, “no speaker has done more to relegate regular order to the sidelines than Hastert.”

Balls.
Brazil’s far-right put in an even stronger than expected showing, with a succession of Bolsonarista politicians winning congressional or gubernatorial races. They included Jair Bolsonaro’s second son, Carlos Bolsonaro, and his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, who both won seats in the senate. Bolsonaro’s youngest son, Jair Renan, was elected to the lower house of congress. Bolsonaro’s former infrastructure minister, Tarcísio de Freitas, was reelected as governor of São Paulo, Brazil’s most populous and economically important state.

Replying “STOP” to a text doesn’t even stop texts from that organization — it only stops texts from *that specific number*, and all of these fundraisers have effectively unlimited numbers they can text you from. www.latimes.com/politics/sto...

This was Kevin Roose interacting with Microsoft’s Bing chatbot in early 2023. This is the sort of thing that he apparently thinks is vindicating for him. (“But AI really is hacking computers now! You see, it… I mean, she… wanted to do it all along!”) www.nytimes.com/2023/02/16/t...

Where I am at is “a dangerous thing is indeed happening, but it is not the hypothetical self-serving dangerous thing that people like Dario Amodei and Jacob Coxon are talking about.” I think @edzitron.com puts it well here:
The way that LLMs have been trained is harmful in effectively every way. It is trained on theft, powered by expensive and power-intensive infrastructure and is both unprofitable and unsustainable. LLMs are not the tool for any kind of beautiful, automated future — they are inefficient, volatile and mathematically certain to make mistakes. “Slowing down” is not sufficient. In my opinion, there is no further reason to invest in this industry, nor has there been for the vast majority of its existence.

Sidenote: Cal described this on the afore-linked episode as “like strapping a weed whacker to your dog and putting it in your back yard and saying “yeah it’s going to help with the weeds back there,” and when the dog chases a squirrel and hurts a bunch of people claiming that it “went rogue” or was “misaligned,” when it’s actually a poorly-designed system that doesn’t fully take into account the problems it could create.

[Image of Spotify listing for AI-generated song “Riding High,” uploaded to Spotify under Lathe of Heaven’s name.]

“I just listened to the song. It’s appalling. The fact that you were able to do that is insane,” Allison, Lathe of Heaven’s vocalist, told me. “The only thing smaller musicians like us have at the end of the day is recognition for the results of our work — being able to enjoy the process of creating something and putting it out into the world knowing it is distinctly a product of our own hands is essentially one of the last driving forces behind making music. It’s hard enough putting this much time and effort into the band as it is. All the members of LoH essentially tailor our lifestyles around having the time to tour, write records and record. And we do it knowing we will likely not see much money in return. The fact that someone could ruin our reputation by dropping this cringe garbage under our name is insanely disheartening and speaks volumes about distribution and streaming services that allow this to happen.”

Darcy James Argue @darcyjamesargue.com · 17/09/2026
On September 10, the Brooklyn-based punk band Lathe of Heaven released a new single on its verified Spotify page called Riding High. Any fan of Lathe of Heaven would have immediately noticed that the song sounded nothing like the band’s previous work, that the vocals were not from lead singer Gage Allison, and that the album cover was widely different from the style and logo the band used previously.

That’s because Lathe of Heaven didn’t write, perform, or willingly release Riding High. I created the song with a simple prompt given to the AI music generator Udio, and I was able to release the track on Lathe of Heaven’s official Spotify page, as well as on its Apple Music, Tidal, and Amazon Music pages, without the band’s knowledge, by exploiting a glaring loophole in the way music is digitally distributed to streaming platforms.

The loophole has existed for years, but people who make AI slop music are now widely abusing it. Today, anyone can easily hijack a real artist’s Spotify page and flood it with AI-generated music. When someone clicks one of those tracks expecting to hear music from their favorite artists, the scammer will collect whatever royalties those streams generate, essentially piggybacking on their popularity, and the listener will hear low quality slop instead of their favorite artist. Various instances of this scam have been documented in the past, but 404 Media was able to identify and replicate the exact loophole scammers are exploiting. It was trivial to do, and neither music streaming platforms nor digital music distributors are taking responsibility for the problem.

Thanks to the writers at DownBeat Magazine for the praise for With Every Breath I Take. (John Murph’s lede is a gem.)
Critics’ Comments

Cécile McLorin Salvant, With Every Breath I Take

The method of this seriously smart song cycle is theatrical formality, not jazz. Salvant is a gifted detector of mislaid music assets (“Barbara Song”). She sculpts high-end stories of evolving relationships with such intense clarity, one can’t avoid their wisdom and drama.

—John McDonough

Remarkably, With Every Breath I Take marks gifted vocalist Salvant’s debut recording with an orchestra. It proves to be a perfect match. Salvant’s collection of standards cements her status as one of the few jazz vocalists capable of finding new emotion in even the most recognizable compositions. Her wistful take on “Lush Life” is a particular highlight. —Ammar Kalia

Salvant has long since shown herself to be a superb “actress” as much as she is an extraordinary vocalist. With exquisite arrangements and beautiful orchestral voicings, this takes her career to a new level. She kills again. —James HaleJohn Murph: Imagine the poshest drag ball, happening either in Manhattan’s Harlem neighborhood or Paris’ La Goutte d’Or district. But instead of contestants battling it out through lip sync performances, the cosmopolitan soiree requires them to power their vocal interpretative skills accompanied by the Netherlands’ Metropole Orkest and a jazz trio. The event’s emcee barks through the microphone, “The category is Victor/Victoria torch-song extravaGANZA!!!!!!!!!”

Enter Cécile McLorin Salvant, the grand motha of jazz singers of her generation. She often puts the songs through her own forensic test, carefully exploring each lyric, delving through thematic corridors, examining all the contours.

She can embody the song, fill it with cinematic drama and make listeners hang on every syllable, word and turn of phrase.

Mind you, With Every Breath I Take is not a live recording of such a fabulously queer occasion — it’s a studio one — and Salvant is not a drag queen. But through Darcy James Argue’s sweeping orchestral arrangements and Salvant’s vocal splendor, the album quickly transports listeners to such a fanciful affair. If she had delivered the opening album’s opening cut — a magnificent reading of Cy Coleman and David Zippel’s title track — at the vogue ball, she would have gagged the judges and had children tossing roses and jewels at her feet, especially toward the end, when she belts out, “I’ve been going on, knowing that my heart will break,” making the last word soar to the stratosphere and linger before softly landing the closing line: “With ev’ry breath I take!”

Fortunately for listeners, the album brims with other audaciously dramatic flourishes such as her frothy, appropriately conniving interpretation of Kurt Weill’s “Barbara Song,” her at once spellbinding and slinky treatment of Buddy Johnson’s “Ever Since The One I Love’s Been Gone” and her transfixing exploration of Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life.” For good measure, the album showcases a sensational origi…

THE CORRECT WAY: HOW TO REGISTER IN 2026

In Appendix H of the Unlock Suno: Studio Edition, we provide a "PRO Quick-Start Guide" that walks you through this process step-by-step. Here is the professional standard for 2026:

1. List YOURSELF as 100% Writer/Composer You are the Director. You made the creative choices. You are the legal entity responsible for the work. You take 100% of the "Writer" and "Publisher" shares.
030
Darcy James Argue @darcyjamesargue.com · 02/09/2026
You’ve put in the work. You’ve used the Golden Seed Method to find your hit, you’ve locked the BPM in Suno Studio, and you’ve mastered the track to -14 LUFS. Now, it’s time to get paid.

You head over to your Performing Rights Organization (PRO)—ASCAP, BMI, or SOCAN—to register your new work. You get to the "Writer" section and you pause. Who wrote this? I prompted it, but Suno generated it. Should I list Suno as a co-writer?

If you enter "Suno AI" or "Artificial Intelligence" in the writer field, you have just committed a career-ending mistake.

THE NIGHTMARE SCENARIO: REJECTION & INVALIDITY

The major North American PROs (ASCAP, BMI, and SOCAN) have been aligning their policies with the U.S. Copyright Office stance: A machine cannot be an author.

If you list an AI platform as a co-writer:

Registration Rejection: Your work will likely be flagged and rejected by the PRO’s automated filters.
Royalty Freeze: Even if it slips through, as soon as a sync placement happens or the track goes viral, the "Chain of Title" will be audited. If the author is listed as a non-human, the copyright is considered invalid, and the royalties are frozen indefinitely.
Invalidated Catalog: This one mistake can cast doubt on your entire portfolio, making you a liability to music publishers and sync agents.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work diligently to bring our services back online.

We are moving as quickly as we safely can, while carefully pacing our restoration efforts as we continue to monitor temperatures in the data center. Additional temporary chillers continue to be brought in and added, further reducing temperatures and improving conditions so that we can safely bring more of our infrastructure and services back online.

We have made important progress:
• Core databases are back online.
• Core virtualization infrastructure supporting http://Namecheap.com and the majority of our services is back online.
• The majority of our core network equipment, both physical and virtual, is back online.
• Internal source control and package management systems are back online.
• All of our major load balancers are back online.

These are all important signs that we are moving in the right direction. Our next phase is to begin restoring http://Namecheap.com, Email, and Hosting services.

This will take time, and services will come back progressively rather than all at once. Our teams remain on site and are working continuously to restore every affected service as quickly and safely as possible.

We know how frustrating and disruptive this has been, and we sincerely apologize. Thank you again for your patience as we work through the restoration.

Chaser:
When this bid to ingratiate itself with the Trump administration proved insufficient, the ADL grew even more submissive. After last September’s assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, Trump allies attacked the ADL for including in its “Glossary of Extremism and Hate” a 2023 entry that accused Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA, of promoting “the idea that Christians should dominate the government and other areas of life in the US.” This accusation, Musk tweeted on September 28, proved that “The ADL hates Christians.” Rather than defend its decades-long opposition to white Christian nationalism, or rebut Musk’s preposterous charge, the ADL deleted not only the entry on Turning Point but the entire glossary. Then, in October, when FBI director Kash Patel accused the ADL of “functioning like a terrorist organization” because it has historically criticized the far-right, the ADL again declined to publicly defend itself. It even asked other American Jewish groups not to speak out on its behalf. It instead deleted much of the language on its website concerning civil rights.

Shot:
The ADL is a telling example. After honoring Kushner in 2024, it responded to Trump’s election by hiring a lobbying firm close to the administration. It also went to extraordinary lengths to avoid publicly antagonizing Trump and his allies. When Elon Musk twice extended his arm in what appeared to be a Nazi salute at a Trump inaugural rally, the ADL overlooked his extensive record of racist and antisemitic comments and defended the move as “an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute.”

INSTEAD OF TRYING TO RECREATE the multi-racial, multi-religious coalitions that in prior decades supported equal treatment for African Americans, women, immigrants, and LGBTQ Americans, the organized American Jewish community is pursuing a separate peace. This separate peace does not involve an ideological defense of Trumpism. But it doesn’t oppose Trump’s vision either. The American Jewish establishment is trying instead to ensure that the white Christian ethnostate Trump is building supports Israel.

Trump can be a hands-on interior decorator.
Some of Mr. Trump’s construction projects in Washington — a ballroom replacing the East Wing of the White House, a 250-foot triumphal arch by the Potomac River — are multimillion-dollar affairs, requiring workers in hard hats and towering cranes.

But one morning, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, entered the Oval Office to find Mr. Trump personally making changes in décor.

The president had a tube of super glue in his hand, the book says, and was trying to adorn the marble fireplace mantel with new golden decorations.

“As he was known to prefer his own aesthetic handiwork to anyone else’s,” the authors write, “the sight of the president squeezing glue onto gilded appliqués and mounting them on the wall himself surprised no one in his inner circle.”

Of course, BB&B is a famous piece. The outline of the story is well-known: Duke premiered the 50-minute, three-movement work, which he called a “tone parallel to the history of the American Negro,” at his Carnegie Hall debut in January 1943, and again a few days later at Boston’s Symphony Hall.
