I'm usually against sharing screenshots from Hell, but this one's too good. Kristi v Kacey? That's no war of wits; that's linguistic assassination. Get 'er, Kacey!🔥
A twitter exchange between Kristi Noem and Kacey Musgraves over a photo of Kacey with Talarico

Noem: "I'll take [Ella Langley] over Kacey Musgraves any day. And if I'm choosin' Texas, I'll take Ken Paxton over James Talarico."

Kacey: "I don't think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it."

Finally had time to sit down and start looking at my Anne Carson books. Here's where Autobiography of Red fell open. And now I'm remembering that I once loaned this to one of my seniors who, when she returned it, said, "I laughed every time I saw you'd written 'asshole' in the margin." 🤣
An open book with a corner turned down and lots of underlining, some bracketing, and one "asshole!" In the margin

Ted Lasso season 4 finale ended with this Mary Oliver poem. 💙💛♥️💛💙
When Death Comes

by Mary Oliver

When death comes like the hungry bear in autumn; when death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse

to buy me, and snaps the purse shut; when death comes like the measle-pox

when death comes like an iceberg between the shoulder blades,

I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering: what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness?

And therefore I look upon everything as a brotherhood and a sisterhood, and I look upon time as no more than an idea, and I consider eternity as another possibility,

and I think of each life as a flower, as common as a field daisy, and as singular,

and each name a comfortable music in the mouth, tending, as all music does, toward silence,

and each body a lion of courage, and something precious to the earth.

When it's over, I want to say all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.

When it's over, I don't want to wonder if I have made of my life something particular, and real.

I don't want to find myself sighing and frightened, or full of argument.

I don't want to end up simply having visited this world.

Yellow

When they turn the sun on again I'll plant children under it, I'll light up my soul with a match and let it sing, I'll take my mother and soap her up, I'll take my bones and polish them, I'll vacuum up my stale hair, I'll pay all my neighbors' bad debts, I'll write a poem called Yellow and put my lips down to drink it up, I'll feed myself spoonfuls of heat and everyone will be home playing with their wings and the planet will shudder with all those smiles and there will be no poison anywhere, no plague in the sky and there will be a mother-broth for all of the people and we will never die, not one of us, we'll go on won't we?

The pear by Jane Kenyon

There is a moment in middle age
when you grow bored, angered
by your middling mind, afraid.

That day the sun
burns hot and bright,
making you more desolate.

It happens subtly, as when a pear
spoils from the inside out,
and you may not be aware
until things have gone too far.

How to Prepare

Best not to dream of death as an enormous spider crossing an empty highway. Instead imagine something all your own to kiss and hug, and small hummingbirds that look like azure foil. If you too awaken between 3:00 and 5:00 to stare into the abyss where flies gather, call me, I'll talk you through until morning. If you sign the release form, I can cite you in the study.

Release, yes, that's the term I was looking for.

Shake your nightclothes out well.

The human condition is made of moisture and heat.

So far, my research is very ad hoc, like dreaming. I lay my head on the pillow by itself and press "record.” Some of us will die alone in our sleep. Peacefully. Because I know I talk in my sleep, I hope one day to transcribe these recordings, and the sound of children passing now by the open window.

Description
Gatsby was amazing. He even managed to see to it that the book about him was regarded as a novel, as pure fiction, as though he didn’t exist. Even Fitzgerald, by the time he was through writing it, believed he’d made the whole thing up. There were those who knew the truth all along, of course; knew everything except where all that money came from. (Even by today’s standards, when millions mean nothing, only billions matter, Gatsby was incomprehensibly rich.) Gatsby walked into rooms wearing a shirt with no collar. Even a little thing like that made people talk. And probably will still do so. Our uncompromising replica of Gatsby’s shirt has the same simple band collar. The placket is simpler, also narrower. The cotton we have used is so luminous, in and of itself, that even a person who notices nothing will notice something. Gatsby, of course, could afford stacks of these shirts — rooms of them. Never mind. All that matters is that you have one, just one.

Lucille Clifton's poem about the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing
alabama 9/15/63

Have you heard the one about the shivering lives, the never to be borne daughters and sons,

the one about Cynthia and Carole and Denise and Addie Mae?

Have you heard the one about the four little birds shattered into skylarks in the white light of Birmingham?

Have you heard how the skylarks, known for their music, swooped into heaven, how the sunday morning strains shook the piano, how the blast is still too bright to hear them play?

Good night, Wendell Berry. We'll sit on a while without you. Thank you for stopping by.
They Sit Together on the Porch

BY WENDELL BERRY

They sit together on the porch, the dark Almost fallen, the house behind them dark. Their supper done with, they have washed and dried The dishes-only two plates now, two glasses, Two knives, two forks, two spoons-small work for two. She sits with her hands folded in her lap, At rest. He smokes his pipe. They do not speak, And when they speak at last it is to say What each one knows the other knows. They have One mind between them, now, that finally For all its knowing will not exactly know Which one goes first through the dark doorway, bidding Goodnight, and which sits on a while alone.

Charles Wright is 91 today. Favorite poem by a favorite poet... Favorite lines of poetry: "If you can’t delight in the everyday, you have no future here."

CHARLES WRIGHT

Future Tense

All things in the end are bittersweet—
An empty gaze, a little way-station just beyond silence.

If you can’t delight in the everyday,
                                                         you have no future here.

And if you can, no future either.

And time, black dog, will sniff you out,
                                                            and lick your lean cheeks,
And lie down beside you—warm, real close—and will not move. A gray haired man in glasses wearing jeans, an sage green shirt, and a brown jacket sits in front of a door and looks at the camera without smiling.

Today's Paris Review Daily Poem is "The Trees" by Jericho Brown. I love this poem. Every time I've read it, some new connection comes to mind.
Jericho Brown

The Trees

In my front yard live three crepe myrtles, crying trees
We once called them, not the shadiest but soothing
During a break from work in the heat, their cool sweat

Falling into us. I don’t want to make more of it.
I’d like to let these spindly things be
Since my gift for transformation here proves

Useless now that I know everyone moves the same
Whether moving in tears or moving
To punch my face. A crepe myrtle is

A crepe myrtle. Three is a family. It is winter. They are bare.
It’s not that I love them
Every day. It’s that I love them anyway.
