Yulei must slay the evil beast to regain his place in the Heavens, but after finding out that his bounty is just a child, he has a better idea: reform it. A found family reversal of the "princess and dragon" tale, told through a blending of Chinese myths and legends. #DVPit #DVArt #POC #GN #YA

020

Daphne @daphnecomics.bsky.social · 08/10/2025

A graphic novel page drawn in traditional chinese ink wash style. Water from the waterfall spills from one panel to the next.

Panel 1: The top of a waterfall.
Narrator: Once upon a time…

Panel 2: The water spills over the scales of a dragon.
Narrator: …deep in the mountains of the Mundane Realm…

Panel 3: A dragon is limp on the shores of a river beneath a waterfall. Its body dips in and out of the water.
Narrator: …a dragon fell from the Heavens.

A page from the original graphic novel, Once Upon a Magpie, introducing Yulei and his mission to slay the savage beast.

Panel 1: A foot with the ground rippling around it.
SFX: fwoosh

Panel 2: Yulei, clothes and hair billowing in the wind, staring intensely at something off in the distance.
Yulei narrating: My name is Yulei, and I’m a dragon.
Yulei narrating: Or to be more precise, I used to be a dragon.

Panel 3: A flashback of Yulei in the heavens being scolded by a goddess.
Yulei narrating: A while back, I picked a fight with some human bandits, and the gods were so furious when they found out that they tossed me out of the Heavens while spouting nonsense about karma and atonement.
Yulei narrating: In short, I ate a couple people and got banished…
Goddess in the background, scolding: Get out of here and repent, you fool.

Panel 4: Yulei twirls a spear as a dragon chimera charges at him. It has the head of a bull, the mane and teeth of a lion, the body of a snake, and the legs of a tiger.
Yulei narrating: …and getting rid of this thing is my ticket back.
The beast: I’ll get you this time, you stinky human!

Panel 5: Yulei swings the spear and cheekily says: Not a human.

Concept art of the main character, Yulei.

The left side is Yulei charging forward, surrounded by swirls of wind drawn in a more ink brush style.

The tight side is a bust of Yulei half in his dragon form.

Text at the upper right reads:
Yulei
The Exiled Dragon

Concept art of the savage beast, Yayu

Left side is Yayu in his beast form, a chimera-like creature consisting of a bull’s head, a lion’s teeth and main, a tiger’s limbs, and a dragon’s body.

Center is Yayu looking up with a grin on his face.

Upper right is Yayu sobbing after a bump to his nose.

Bottom text reads:
Yayu

Another update, this time of Jun, the female lead 😌 I didn't want to redraw this at first because I was wondering how much my art realistically could have changed in a couple years, and if it was worth the effort. Apparently it changed a lot more than I thought haha... #Concept | #MagpieComic
