For his birthday, 14 y/o requested (in lieu of a cake): "an eclair filled with creme brulee AND an apple crumble, topped with whipped cream and a salted caramel sauce". If I may say so myself, I think I rose to the occasion quite nicely (and it's all gluten free to boot!)

Since I learned English as a small child living briefly in California, and then mostly kept it up by reading and watching tv, it's not surprising that California is my base dialect. What is more interesting is that despite 7 years in Rhode Island my dialect appears to be closer to Maine.

A screenshot from the results of my survey from mydialect.us. It shows a heatmap of the US, with redder areas indicating closer to my dialect yellow areas as the medium, and bluer areas furthest away from my dialect. The text indicates that I talk most like someone from California, with a 53% match. The heatmap shows California in dark red, with softer red or orange in the pacific northwest and moving into nevada, then yellow followed by a large area of blue throughout the midwest and the south, transitioning back to yellow and turning back into orange for New England and darker orange for the Northwest (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont etc.)

כשבשנה שעברה בסוף אוגוסט הארץ פרסמו כתבה עם כותרת שאפשר לקרוא אותה כקריאה להכניס ילדים לכדורי שוקולד, חשבתי שזה סתם משעשע. כשהם פרסמו כותרת דומה שוב השנה, אני כבר מתחילה לחשוב שלמישהו ב"הארץ" ממש נמאס מהילדים שלו לקראת סוף החופש.

שתי כותרות מהארץ: אחת "לשבור, לערבב, לכדרר - ולכול - מתכונים להכנה עם ילדים". השנייה: "השתמשו בילדים כדי להכין את כדורי השוקולד האהובים, 27 מתכונים."

I believe we have officially reached the parenting stage where rather than worrying about our kid feeling abandoned by us sometimes, we are routinely abandoned by our kid. He announced a few days ago he was going to his cousin for the week, and has since communicated in rare single-word texts.

בן13 קיבל משימת קריאה באנגלית לחופש - בחירה בין ארבעה או חמישה ספרים. כולם כאחד נראים לי כמו מעין ספרי "ראשית קריאה" שנכתבו במיוחד עבור תלמידי esl. אף אחד מהם לא מרגיש כמו ספר "אמיתי". אני ממש מתוסכלת שלא נותנים להם לפחות את האופציה לקרוא יצירת ספרות אמיתית באנגלית, אפילו אם כזו לגיל צעיר יותר.

Teen tried to shock me today by saying he might get a Mohawk. When I was unimpressed he said he would dye it green. Then that he'd get a piercing. He was rather disappointed when my responses to all of this were "sure, if you want". Now I worry I'm not giving him a safe outlet for teen rebellion.

The funniest thing about this is that my husband is so terrible at hearing accents that for the 6.5 years we lived in Providence (or Prahvuhdence, I should say) he absolutely didn't believe me that there was a Rhode Island accent. He didn't hear it.
