Corruption is a central issue of the midterms, with both Democrats and Republicans mentioning it in their ads--more than any issue other than the economy. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

We reviewed $1.6 billion of campaign ads. Here are the takeaways.
Everyone’s talking about the economy, but Republicans and Democrats can’t agree on what other issues will mobilize midterm voters.

But it’s perilous to harp on corruption without offering solutions. The big question for the winners of this election will be “What will you actually do about the problems you campaigned on?”

Both parties are campaigning hard on corruption this year — which is another way money has shaped this year’s campaign. Politicians across the spectrum sense how unhappy voters are. The big question for after the election is what they will do about it.

And it’s working. Democratic Party consultants, for instance, are reportedly warning their candidates to go easy on promises to regulate AI so that the money will keep coming in. www.politico.com/news/2026/09...

The AI and crypto industries, for instance, are giving a lot of money to candidates in safe elections. The point is not to sway the outcome but to get policy results.

Dan Weiner @danw329.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
But in the end, the horse race is not the most important story. Money matters because candidates need it to fund their campaigns and future runs for office. The real question is what to the donors giving this money want in return.

It’s true that some of the GOP advantage is overstated b/c Democrats raise more for their actual campaigns, who get more favorable ad rates compared to super PACs under FCC rules. But recent Supreme Court rulings have made it much easier for the GOP to get these favorable rates too.
111
Dan Weiner @danw329.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
First, the campaign isn’t over. A deluge of spending is about to drop in the final days and it is very hard to know the impact. Control of the Senate in particular is likely to come down to a few close contests where vast amounts of money to pay for ads and GOTV absolutely could make a difference.

Dan Weiner @danw329.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Republicans have a big money advantage so far in the midterms but so far it doesn’t seem to be translating to better polls. But make no mistake, money still matters. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

We’ve dispensed with even the pretense that Trump’s super PAC is “independent” from him — the whole reason it could raise hundreds of millions of dollars in the first place, according to the logic of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. www.brennancenter.org/our-work/res...

People will focus on this apparent climb down from the (likely illegal) use of public money to pay for pro-Trump propaganda ads, but the “fix” of the president paying for them with super PAC money is remarkable. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/u...

Dan Weiner @danw329.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Hence there is nothing that unusual about a political operative meeting with contractor’s representative to discuss a big donation, no matter how shocking this might be to most Americans, so long as there is no literal quid pro quo.
111
Dan Weiner @danw329.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
You have to at least maintain the fiction that that these givers are separate from the entity holding the contract, which most contractors are able to do.
121
Dan Weiner @danw329.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Contractors are supposed to be banned from making campaign donations but they can easily get around that prohibition by giving through their affiliates and executives.
141
Dan Weiner @danw329.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Second, the law governing political donations from government contractors is laughably weak.
141
Dan Weiner @danw329.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Super PACs enabled by Citizens United have become an integral part of many candidates’ campaigns, and giving money to a super PAC is seen as an important way to win favorable treatment from the government. That’s the diametric opposite of what the Court said in CU and other cases.
173
Dan Weiner @danw329.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
First, this is yet another example of just how wrong the Supreme Court was in Citizens United about the corrupting potential of unlimited campaign spending.
