Reminded this week of the audacity and optimism of the Apollo programme. Discussed it and why states getting just getting stuff done is so important here a few months ago:

This week I had the privilege of planting a stake in Parliament's Constituency Garden of Remembrance to commemorate the fallen of Chipping Barnet. We will never forget their sacrifice, commitment, and bravery – it is through their service that we enjoy the freedoms we hold dear today.
The constituency garden of remembrance in Parliament, which is on the front lawn. There are small, black plastic name cards with each constituency written on. Behind a few of the name cards are small wooden stakes with red poppies on and handwritten messages from MPs. The lawn is lush and green and a small border of wooden stakes with paper poppies stuck to every other stake surrounds the garden.

Very much enjoyed participating in this event hosted by @uclpolicylab.bsky.social at #Lab25 conference yesterday. Lots of interesting and thoughtful ideas from both panel and audience alike on how we can spread opportunity across the country - this govt is committed to making this happen!

Wonderful to visit Oak Hill School and meet headteacher Kevin Grant to discuss their excellent work. I had the chance to meet some of the dedicated staff, and incredibly bright and engaged students. I’m really impressed by how they're teaching and nurturing their 50 pupils.

My first remarks to the House of Commons as Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury. We're lifting the burden of the cost of living crisis, backing those who want to invest in the future of this country, and helping everyday families.

Let me be absolutely clear: my commitment to Chipping Barnet remains unwavering. You elected me to serve our constituency first and foremost, and that will always be my priority. This appointment gives me another platform to fight for the change we all voted for, both locally and nationally.

This is a role that allows me to champion Chipping Barnet at the highest levels of government whilst continuing to fight for better living standards and opportunities for everyone, in every part of the UK.

International human rights laws, and the ECHR, will be subject to change over the coming years. The question now is: who will lead this change? My article for @thetimes.com, with @dantomlinson.bsky.social, on the need for progressives to shape reform of the ECHR.👇 www.thetimes.com/article/becb...

Ripping up the convention would be disastrous for the European effort against Russia. Instead, we must lead the change

What a privilege to celebrate the Barnet Environment Centre's 50th anniversary. Had a fantastic time speaking at their birthday party and touring the nature reserve. Amazing to think over 2,500 children visited last year - a wonderful place for young people in Barnet to connect with nature!

On VE Day, we think of all those in Barnet who served our country in WW2. People like Ruth Bourne, 98, from High Barnet. Ruth worked at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire, in an all-female secret team pulled together by the British government, where the codebreakers intercepted Nazi messages.

We can’t sustainably grow our economy without making common-sense investments in infrastructure like the Leeds tram.

Thankfully, under this @teamlabouruk.bsky.social govt, things are different. We have a Chancellor who chose to increase public investment by more than £100bn in this Parliament.

This stuff isn’t hard. Over 20 French cities have built tram networks since 2000. In Germany, there are now no fewer than 60 cities with a tram. The UK – falling further and further behind when it comes to urban public transport.

We can kid ourselves that this economic divergence is complicated and difficult to sort out. Or we can look at the evidence on how much slower and unreliable travel is in places like Leeds and do something about it. For more on this see @jpspencer.bsky.social @labourtogether.bsky.social new report.

And large cities and their nearby towns in the rest of the country aren’t fulfilling their potential, and have been falling further behind economically (with the exception of a few places e.g. Manchester and Edinburgh).
161
Dan Tomlinson MP @dantomlinson.bsky.social · 08/04/2025
This matters for all of us. The English economy is so very unique – with just one large city with above average productivity. We are flying on one engine. London and the South East are more expensive than they need to be, with housing costs cratering living standards in this part of the country.
170
Dan Tomlinson MP @dantomlinson.bsky.social · 08/04/2025
As a country, we used to be good at building our future – but for too long now we’ve blocked it before it even has a chance to arrive.
172
Dan Tomlinson MP @dantomlinson.bsky.social · 08/04/2025
Worth pausing on how the scheme that was canned here was just 9 miles in length – over 10 times smaller than the tram network of the 1950s. And our politicians couldn’t even get this over the line.
140
Dan Tomlinson MP @dantomlinson.bsky.social · 08/04/2025
Fast forward four years however...and the scheme was rejected. With familiar foes in the form of our unwieldy planning system and coordinated campaigns from local opposition – along with a lack of leadership from government – the project couldn’t get over the line.
141
Dan Tomlinson MP @dantomlinson.bsky.social · 08/04/2025
But hope springs eternal! In 2012, a new government approved a new trolleybus scheme for Leeds. The Transport Secretary heralded the scheme as “transformational for growth and jobs in West Yorkshire”. Not a proper tram – but a big step in the right direction.
141
Dan Tomlinson MP @dantomlinson.bsky.social · 08/04/2025
After years of dither, in 2005, the Leeds Supertram project was cancelled, with rising costs & public opposition both cited. The cost? Less than £1bn in today’s money. Can’t think about this for too long without getting angry.
171
Dan Tomlinson MP @dantomlinson.bsky.social · 08/04/2025
But then followed abject failure. My theory: national politicians were soothed by high growth rates, and so weren’t worrying enough about the long-term impact of under-investment. Public sector investment was way too low in the 1990s and early-2000s.

Dan Tomlinson MP @dantomlinson.bsky.social · 08/04/2025
In most countries, the city could have just decided to build one itself. But centralisation meant waiting on Westminster. And Westminster had finally stepped up.
