Van doing the songs of Mose Allison is a total delight on this shiny Friday morning. Georgie Fame is his usual wonderful self.

I will defend indie publishers to my last breath but some do make it hard for themselves. Just read a blurb with a weird font, odd moments of bold type in orange against black background whilst making their book sound like some wacky sub Terry Pratchett affair. Not for me. Not for me.

If anyone is in Paris, a fab new exhibition in the Grand Palais - Cezanne et Nous. Tracing how his influence can be seen across time. Of course some stunning Cezannes but also plenty of other amazing artists. A shame they couldn’t find a Gwen John to put in there though.

As our hotel in Paris is on the same street as where Verlaine lived for a number of years, I thought I’d pay my respects. It was somehow rather apt that his plaque is covered up and almost impossible to find. Poor old Paul.

Thanks to @backlisted.bsky.social one of my reading experiences of the year - stepped right outside my genre comfort zone into this capacious beauty. As only a really good long novel can do, it’s left me feeling a bit bereft after spending so long in its company. (And yes 22 yrs late to the party)

In the overall scheme of life and death, it’s no biggie but dear god surely a restaurant can offer something else other than risotto as it’s some vegetarian option - it’s so fucking lazy

Rather obsessed with Time It’s Time by Talk Talk at the moment. It’s such a fitting end to a truly remarkable album. The soul’s uplift.

You would think after 34 years that I have nothing to be stressed out about regarding the new academic year. (Especially as I’m going part time.) But dear god, new term anxiety is through the roof tonight. Serious breathing exercises and distraction required.

Reginald Brill had an indefatigable interest in the everyday lives of people, and they're often captured off-guard as in this work of an orange seller at Sudbury, Suffolk from around the mid-1950s.

There’s a tendency in modern fiction to drop the reader unaided into the story. How long is it reasonable for the writer to continue to withhold info - like who they are, how they’re related, what’s in the big house, what the big secret is that everyone knows except the reader. Asking for a mate.

In Birmingham Art Gallery and had to explain why to one of the warders they need to change this display so that the drive side is facing the viewer and in the big ring. He said he’d pass it on. (He’s not passing it on, is he?)

While various sectors of the media are castigating schools for partially closing or sending out sensible advice about hydration and generally caring about kids, I’d like to point out there’s a massive recruitment crisis and all that noise is not helping encourage people to join the profession.
