Perhaps we will have a gentle sort of AI takeover... apps like "Washer", will be "Uber, in reverse".. where sentient cars summon humans to come wash them. "Frankie arrives in 6 minutes, with the premium loofah sponges and turtle wax"

Jev will be great as an AI that can classify things... I know I'll have fun But be wary: there'll be many overnight "Jev experts" that'll promise the world. Poorly written queries might drop email / customer results on the floor. Test your assumptions well! "measure twice, cut once"

I gotta say, if you are racing fan, check out the #nurburgring #n24 - I love F1, but this scene is such a breath of fresh air. So many different car classes! Being streamed on YT

Silly prediction, #npm ecosystem and supply chain attacks: some developers will throw their hands up, and say "Claude, dupe the functionality of these packages, so we no longer depend on them" basically a self-silo, self-defensive move. (not what I would do today, but I can see how some would)

Heya! I updated alap to 3.2 (create dynamic menus for ordinary links), and it supports :atproto: examples.alap.info/bluesky-atpr...
From the dynamic menu example: AT Protocol URIs (at://) have no default browser handler — they're a natural fit for Alap's Option of Choice pattern. This example shows two data modes: static entries in allLinks and dynamic results from the :atproto: protocol handler.

Soon.. Alap 3.2, Gather, and Pal 🐕
000
Daniel Smith @dansmithcreates.bsky.social · 20/04/2026
and a peek at :json: protocol, where we might get multiple fields, for use in making a lightbox or a lens (or just thumbnails alongside a menu....) that's all for now, except to say "look, a link does not have to be this fixed thing that just goes to one place.. we've been doing that 35 years!"
000
Daniel Smith @dansmithcreates.bsky.social · 20/04/2026
coming in alap 3.2, I wrote a tutorial that walks through how to write a protocol (reaching out to a data source that can at least give an array of labels and links). This one is :hn: (Hackernews)

Looking for additional web dev work I would like to get 10 or more hours a week of a gig where I can: * leverage my decades of web experience + AI, to bring ideas to life * help refactor old projects, etc See github.com/DanielSmith and alap.info (and yes, I rewrote grabchars recently, as well)

I am working away at alap 3.2, which will support local obsidian vaults... but also, one needs to get data into a vault in the first place :) so, alap 3.1 handles some #atproto and can call into json apis (and can use this to make a menu, a lightbox, or a lens) and obsidian is next
snapshot of conversions that I am writing to get data into an obsidian vault, so that alap can query obsidian, as part of a dynamic menu

supported types are: plain markdown files, and:
Known plugins: `hugo`, `jekyll`, `mkdocs`, `docusaurus`. Unknown names warn and are dropped.
also, rss feeds

is funny how they did the improv "t shirt shroud" for #artemis for the next mission they will give it some official name... "artemis, adjust the FLD at window 2 orientation" "understood, Houston, tweaking Fabric Light Diffuser"

Daniel Smith @dansmithcreates.bsky.social · 06/04/2026
wondering about #artemis videography.. didnt they take a lunar telescope to continuously video record? Seems a long way to go, just to rely on a few Nikons (w/400mm lens) and a few SD cards... I mean, we'll get great images, but I would think they would be recording terabytes of telescope (?)

My new post on Medium about alap gist is: we have had 35 years of static links, one target. I think we can improve on that, and do so in an open format. ...and we can dynamically call @atproto.com endpoints, while we're at it. alap.info javajoint.medium.com/alap-v3-reth...

Ladies And Gents: alap.info I've been hinting about a project for a while... Web Links should offer choice, when it makes sense. beta + web site to check out simple expression lang, tons of examples yes, we can make dynamic menus that include #Atproto data apache license, see repo
a sample alap menu, launched from an ordinary HTML link, and it is ARIA compliantsample of alap expressions
we have plain ids, .tags, @macros, :protocols: such as web and atproto, and *refiners* - all with parentheses grouping

36 Years Later, I rewrote Grabchars
TL;DR — grabchars 2.0 gets one or more keystrokes from the user, and is used to make highly interactive shell scripts

grabchars 2.1 — my CLI keystroke utility, rewritten in Rust. One tool for y/n prompts, filtered input, masked fields, selection menus, timeouts with defaults. New in 2.1: JSON output, fuzzy filtering, ESC handling. cargo, Homebrew, AUR, GitHub. github.com/DanielSmith/grabchars

36 years later, grabchars 2.0! I wrote it in 1988 to fill the gap between "read a whole line" and "press any key." Single keystrokes, filtered input, masked fields, selection menus, timeouts. Building blocks for making highly interactive shell scripts. github.com/DanielSmith/grabchars

Hey #f1 fans! limit on compression ratio seems silly to me: * F1 is supposed to be about innovation * b/c of budget caps, teams do not have unlimited $ to throw at engine dev * Reliability: want higher ratio? fine, risk engine go boom www.planetf1.com/news/fia-com...

seen in a local slack today (someone being a wannabe AI Coolkid) "why do we even use IDEs?" ... and (big eye roll here.. ) .. sheesh, stop it, just stop. Some are so overhyped that they're getting ridiculous. AI is a tool. IDEs are a tool. Lots of things are tools. Chill, man. Use what works.
