On one of my last days in Bosnia, I got the chance to hike up to the Donji Močioci stećak necropolis. I'm having a lot of thoughts, most still percolating, but one thing I'm noticing is the slight convex curve of the peak of the 'sarcophagus' type of stećak.

Daydreaming, as always, about the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon. I have been to this museum once in my life, but the interiors are so often the settings for my dreams.

Interior--modernist, minimalist. Carpeted floor with low table surrounded by four chairs. Glass wall/windows reveal courtyard with greenery.

Other location in same styled interior, with stairway descending. Ceiling lights are soft orange and diffuse. Lots of strong, straight lines. Wood dominates.

Every language on this flashcards app is represented by a national or regional flag, except for Scottish Gaelic. A much better way to do things, imo.

Drop-down menu with language names (e.g. Russian, Samoan, etc.) next to a flag emoji. Scots Gaelic, however, is next to an image of a glass of whisky.

Tear gas, pepper balls, and other projectiles being deployed against protesters this morning at Broadview ICE facility. The protests were peaceful. Chanting, singing. Then every few minutes, federal agents would shoot stuff at us. You really can't believe how blatant this is until you see it.

Dear Anthropology faculty and student colleagues,

As you know, at the end of last week, I met with Costas Nakassis, chair of the Department of Anthropology; Kelly Pollock, SSD Dean of Students; and Paul Poast, SSD Deputy Dean of Doctoral Education. During that meeting, I informed Costas that we will pause admissions to the Anthropology PhD program for Academic Year 2026-27. Acting with direction from the president and the provost, our division made this decision in light of the University’s budget challenges as well as the current and likely future effects of external changes in resources upon which our faculty, students, and staff depend.

Importantly, all commitments (financial, advising, and research support) for current and incoming students in the program will remain in place. Pausing admissions for one year will provide the department with the capacity to adapt to a reduced cohort size going forward, and to consider changes to the curriculum and program structure that a changing cohort size will require.

The innumerable accomplishments of Anthropology faculty, students, and alumni illustrate the eminence of this department. Although I understand that this pause may initially cause concern and frustration, this is a short-term measure to reinforce the foundation on which future generations of Anthropology doctoral students will build.
