Velshi Banned Book Club: Author Angie Thomas and a big win against censorship in Florida
In August of 2024, a group of publishers, students, parents, and best-selling authors including Velshi Banned Book Club vets like Julia Alvarez, Laurie Halse Anderson, Jodi Picoult, and Angie Thomas filed a lawsuit against Florida for book banning provisions within House Bill 10-69, which saw 700+ beloved works of literature removed from shelves in the state. And this week, “we pushed back, and we won,” says author Angie Thomas. The freedom to read was upheld. “None of these books are obscene” wrote the judge in a 50-page decision. Books "are a gateway" to empathy, says Thomas. "They allow us to step into lives unlike our own.”

Right now, the Supreme Court is hearing Mahmoud v. Taylor, a case engineered to give religious parents a veto over curricula at public schools, especially LGBTQ materials. SCOTUS intervened prematurely—in what seems to be a rush to side with the anti-LGBTQ parents. slate.com/news-and-pol...
You called this an “early” challenge to a “supposed” policy. Can you expand on that?

Well, the complaint that the plaintiffs filed doesn’t actually provide information about how these instructional materials are used in education. We don’t know, for instance, if these books are just appearing on shelves, or if the teacher picks up a book and reads it. Usually that would be the end of the case. The plaintiffs did not develop any allegations to substantiate the idea that these instructional materials are being used in a way that substantially burdens their religion or instructs their children in violation of their religious beliefs. Yet the Supreme Court was like: You know what? Let’s take this bad boy and see what we can do with it.
