Pop Rocks & Barricades

I hear a crackle
and the anticipation fills me,
and then the first
POP!
I squeal with delight
as the candy bounces around
my mouth, and my friends
all smile with me,
because they feel it, too.
Oh, a childhood of
neon nightlights and pop rocks!

They hear the crackle of the speakers
and the dread fills them,
and then the first
POP!
They scream in fear
as they hear bullets bounce around
the halls, and their friends
stare at them, horror-struck,
because they feel it, too.
Oh. A childhood of
dimmed lights and school desk barricades.

Maybe when they’re all grown up
they’ll tell st—
POP.
