Depending on your goals, I would possibly second the suggestion for PeerTube. If your goals line up with what it can provide, PeerTube could be a viable alternative worth looking at.

You will have to work exponentially harder to make any alternative platform work for you to get the same results in terms of monetization and viewership, if even physically possible. Changing that reality is going to take tremendous effort from multitudes which is unfortunately unlikely. (3/3)

for discoverability and monetization, it’s awesome. You’re in total control of your data and content. You don’t have to worry about certain videos getting deleted (assuming you’re the admin). I would love for more to use PeerTube (and Owncast). It is what it is though. 🙂 (8/8)

From me, as someone who likes PeerTube, it’s not a drop-in like-for-like replacement for Twitch or YouTube. Most people want the ability for their content to be monetized easily or to have very easy discoverability to grow their audience. Those are possible with PeerTube yes. It’s much harder (4/?)

I replied in a separate thread on server specs. From the user/ creator experience, it’s been ok for me. It’s decentralized meaning each server manages its own data and content while sharing with other servers you allow. That’s great for maintaining control of your data and content. It also (1/?)

resolutions available for your stream, even with Owncast you will need more CPUs on the server to be able to do the transcoding to different resolutions. More resolutions means more CPUs and a bit more RAM. Owncast has a site where live streamers can have there stream listed in one place, too. 9/9

as long as you only want a single resolution for your stream. If you are comfortable with just streaming with a single resolution, you might even be able to get it working with Dreamhost’s VPS business server. Or slightly higher specs somewhere else. 4 CPU 2GB RAM. If you want different (cont 8/?)
