Today's teaching - editing with first year students for Media and Film, and English Literature and Film. Breaking down the editing in films like Psycho and Wolf of Wall Street, and discussing editing aspects (Continuity, montage, the 180 degree rule, match cuts, etc.) was fun.

I think that I would pick: 20th Century Women (2015), Sorcerer (1977); X2 (2003); or Wonder Boys (2000). But those are just titles that come to mind at the moment. There are still loads of other great films yet to be written about for the series...

I raised the Atlantic article with some first year students today and asked their thoughts on it. They were a bit cagey about it, but they did find funny the analogy of people reaching for their phones mid-film being comparable to being addicted to smoking.

Hmmm. I do try and draw students on the rise of streaming to home movie systems, laptops, and cellphones as a change in cinematic apparatus and viewing context. "If you don't have a chance to see it communally on a big screen, is it still a film, or just "content"?", I might ask as an opener...

It is a shame because they miss out on an experience close to theatrical exhibition, being able to bond with peers, and actually observe other people responding in real time. But I guess that stuff like outside commitments, the ease/comfort of online home viewing, and commuting issues play a role.

I am keen on having screenings, and I have tried to keep them on a couple of my modules. However, even with earlier start times - say around midday or 4pm as opposed to 5pm or 6pm - students typically don't attend.(Even on one module where they select films to screen ahead of presentations.)
