When I was a developer I objected to the use of the term "Software Engineer" because engineering as a profession requires evaluations and certifications that simply aren't present in the software development world. Then I learned that it was Margaret Hamilton who first coined it and thought, ok.

I feel like we ranted about it for a hot second in 2016 and then just banished it from our collective memory.

It’s the worst kind of anthropomorphizing. Birds aren’t mammals. What would be an exceedingly unpleasant experience for a human is not the same for a bird. I guarantee you that gavaging or no, any bird that winds up in a dish at Le Dip lived a far happier life than one destined for Roamin’ Rooster.

The dumbest thing about the bent up arm signal is that it was originally conceived of for cars, because only the left arm could be visible outside of the driver's window. Bikes don't have windows!

I and others have made the observation that if you are not a current or former DC resident it's difficult to fathom the emotional toll the physical destruction of our city has been going through. And the ever present thought that even worse is to come.

I was in France with a buddy and we walked past an audio shop with some Wilsons in the window and he said he wanted to think about a system for his apartment and I said, well, those speakers run about $70K each...

The Biden hate is fascinating to me. I mean, he actually got a lot of stuff done! I wasn't happy that he ran for reelection and would've preferred a real primary but I don't know that a different candidate would've done much for the Dems in '24 anyway. But he did a good job.

The thing that's absolutely nucking futs about this is that something like one in two humans didn't survive until their fifteenth birthday, prior to widespread vaccination. One of the greatest things we've ever accomplished as a species and whackadoodles want to claw it back.

Texas Pediatricians Face Paxton Investigations for Vaccinating Children (Gift Article)
Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general and Republican Senate candidate, has alleged a sprawling profit-driven conspiracy. Pediatricians say the accusations are an attempt at intimidation.

Tangential, but every time I hear this song I start hearing this melody, but with the lyrics to "Sympathy for the Devil" in my head.

When I encounter these triangulating types who, when presented with facts, come out with a hesitant, “I don’t know about that…” I say, “Well, I do. And I’m telling you.” It really shocks people.

Great you think you’re capable of modeling a crude version of the internal calculator, absent having ever peed in the grass under a full moon while the insect sounds are on the verge of hurting your ears, three months after your mom died, but just the calculator part? Okay, have fun.

Look, AI isn’t conscious. Consciousness comes from thinking while having a body. AI, at best, can think. But consciousness is thinking plus (physically) feeling. AI doesn’t get hungry, or sweat through its shirt, or have an unwanted crush on a coworker, or have to hold in a fart…

Sometimes just vibes. We know we want to get from Boston to New York. It’s south and west of where we are. There will be signs. This led to some spectacular fuckups, but basically you pointed yourself in the general direction and it usually worked.

Wow. We would never do anything like that in this country except maybe put a radical Christian nationalist who had previously been barred from serving at a presidential inauguration after being reported as an insider threat in charge of the whole damn military.

I'm not really sure about that. And sure, the actual aesthetics of the thing are definitely Trumpian, but the need has been discussed for decades. The slope of the lawn, the potential for sod to get kicked up into sensitive spots, that sort of thing.
