In May 2023, a jury found the city liable and awarded the family $10.2M. Lawyers for the city said errors by the judge deprived them of a fair trial and a new trial was ordered. Now, the city is looking to settle the case for $27 million.

After spending nearly 90 minutes in the emergency department’s waiting room, then outside the ER entrance, he left the hospital and returned home. The hospital didn’t notice for another 90 minutes. At home that same day, prosecutors say he stabbed his wife through the chest. She later died.
