Makes sense. So much of research can be serious business, but when we have to come up with words or sentences with specific or unusual properties, it’s a chance to have fun and be a little creative.

It's always a delight to see psycholinguistics stimuli that make use of the richness of human language. Today's example: Playing a recording to newborn infants of someone saying "The uptight mollusk drew a polearm." #snl2026 doi.org/10.1111/desc...

Uh-oh. ;) Reading his original study on the readiness potential was a formative college experience for me. To think that EEG could bear on questions of free will!! Incredible stuff, and so so thought-provoking when I read it, though I know that subsequent work showed the key finding was illusory.

In a Geneva park before #snl2026, I talked to a man who, upon finding out what I do, immediately began discussing Benjamin Libet’s studies of consciousness and free will. I asked if he was a philosopher: “Only in the way that all curious people are philosophical.” Not like that, they’re not!

I’ve been to locations off I-5 with a 30-minute wait at the same time as an adjacent McDonald’s was empty. (And I joined the queue.) They’re simply not fungible.

I continue to do my part in recommending In-N-Out even though I haven’t lived in a state with one for the past decade. Is it the best burger? No. Is it the best fast food burger? Arguably, yes. Is going there an identifiably Californian experience? Absolutely.

Me, every time I retrieve a broken EEG cap from a data collection site to bring back to New Haven:
A screenshot from the original TV special “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. The Grinch, wearing a red Santa hat and coat, is carrying off a decorated Christmas tree from a home. The text, quoting from the video, says: “I’m taking it home to my workshop, my dear. I’ll fix it up there, then I’ll bring it back here.”

If you are the editor of a journal which enforces a hard limit on word count or pages for submissions, please ensure that limit is clearly spelled out in the instructions to authors. Being hit with a surprise limit on the final screen of the submission process is not a great feeling!

😱
A screenshot from the linked DataColada post. The text at the top says "Here is a screenshot of the original data file, formatted and sorted to be easier to digest:". The accompanying picture shows pairs of rows grouped by subject numbers exactly ten apart. For 9 of the 10 pairs, within each pair, the two participants have identical "Corrections Made" values on the three tasks – so, subjects 1 and 11 look the same, subjects 2 and 12 look the same, etc.

All Excel clones are inferior, so I'm stuck there. But I'm now looking into paying OOP for software that does a better job syncing between OS and Sharepoint than *Microsoft's own product*. I would ask how the M365 Mac dev team hasn't been fired yet... but maybe they were all fired years ago. </rant>

2) I installed OneDrive to sync across computers. I discovered today that it keeps 2(!) copies (not symlinks) of all downloaded files(!!) in separate locations – so, 300GB of files take up 600GB. BOTH copies are necessary for functioning. Forums suggest this has been a known problem for 5+ years!

It's 2026. Why is Microsoft 365 for Mac still so terrible? 1) Excel only updates some cells when they are offscreen. This has been true for at least *a decade*. When I update a formula and copy/paste over a range, I reflexively skip to row ~1M and then back up so I can see the effect. Insanity!

Contrast this with Michael Crichton’s unrealistic and shabby shorthand for “scientific genius” in The Andromeda Strain, in which a Very Intelligent Scientist publishes a paper so important that it’s printed in both Science *and* Nature.
A highlighted excerpt from The Andromeda Strain: “He explained [his ideas] in a short paper entitled “Sterilization of Spacecraft”, printed in Science and later reprinted in the British journal Nature.”

Just discovered that one of the iPhone’s emoji suggestions for “duck” is 🤬. This cracks me up because Apple auto-corrects a certain swear word to “duck”. Did their model learn a co-occurrence relationship between “duck” and 🤬??
A screenshot from an iPhone text conversation. Another texter wrote “Apple stop censoring me!!” That message has been highlighted for a tapback response. Within the set of options, the user has searched for “duck”. Apple suggestions 5 options: A baby duck, a baby duck hatching, a mallard, a bird face, and a censored swearing face.

They write about the problems with reducing student achievement to a single letter grade, a problem familiar to every professor. And in the vein of 'making a complex story easy to understand', they discuss the inherent tension between expertise and accessibility, which is at the heart of scicomm.
