The phone went early one morning with Gran telling me that Keegan had signed Alan Shearer for Newcastle - £15 million pounds, no less. Those memories of that time connected me to home, and it is only recently that the team has come close to repeating that sense of passion again

We signed Les Ferdinand and David Ginola, almost winning the league that season. Keegan shaped a team based around winning by scoring. Where my parents were missionaries. I was a scared 9 year old kid. My Newcastle United shirt was my pride and joy. it was stolen from our washing line shortly after we moved there. I got a replacement - some friends back home sent me one - and my wonderful Gran would ring us to update us on the team

The first team I remember was built around Andy Cole. I remember a playground of crying kids being comforted by their parents when we came out of school to be told Newcastle had sold Andy Cole to Manchester United - the deepest betrayal we could imagine. 4 months later I moved to Papua New Guinea

I've only shed tears at a handful of celebrity deaths. The one that sticks out most in my mind is the death of George Harrison, when I found out in a Maths lesson from a friend. The death of Kevin Keegan has really moved me. His time as manager of Newcastle United was a huge time in my life
