#bioacoustics community: do you know any online platforms for volunteers to join an acoustics project, validate and label acoustic data (e.g. birdnet detections, false negatives), filter for specific species etc? I asked this a few yrs ago but nothing of the sort existed...

It struck me at our #Publishing Workshop at #ICCB2025 that there is more we can do to help our authors find agency in their decision making when choosing a journal. I highly recommend that all authors consider the following information sources when choosing a journal. 👇 #OpenAccess 🧪

I'm using BirdNET (default & custom) for almost every project now. It blows my mind how easy ML has become. To think of all the years I spent learning how to build recognisers in monitoR, Kaleidoscope, Arbimon etc ... now I can focus on the fun stuff - answering ecological questions! #bioacoustics

Alternatively, if you use the BirdNET-Analyzer, you can select the option to "combine selection tables" BUT this combines all data analysed, so it's not appropriate if you want to keep data from different sites separate. You could split this table but you'd still need to adjust offset times.
010
Daniella Teixeira @daniteixeira.bsky.social · 15/01/2025
The tricky part is combining selection tables and adjusting the offset time. I've written some R code to do this. It requires the duration of each audio file to be read, so it can be really slow when you're dealing with 100s or 1000s of files. But it's the only solution I've come up with so far.
010
Daniella Teixeira @daniteixeira.bsky.social · 15/01/2025
Third, to review your selections, you can use the Review panel, provided that the selection table is the left-most table (in cases where you have multiple tables). The Review option is one of the great features of Raven Pro IMO - I've been using it for years and it's almost perfect (almost :))
000
Daniella Teixeira @daniteixeira.bsky.social · 15/01/2025
Second, bring in a single selection table that has the 'Begin Time (s)' and 'End Time (s)' adjusted for the cumulative duration of all audio files in your list.
000
Daniella Teixeira @daniteixeira.bsky.social · 15/01/2025
First, you need to bring in your audio files in a single sound window. As with single files, you can drag-and-drop a whole bunch of files and then use the 'page' functions to minimise memory reqs. Alternatively, you can provide a list file with the filepaths to your audio files.
000
Daniella Teixeira @daniteixeira.bsky.social · 15/01/2025
UPDATE: After almost a decade of using Raven Pro, I just learnt how to review selections from multiple audio files in a single view 😲 Basically, you just need a single selection table. Let me explain... #bioacoustics

Daniella Teixeira @daniteixeira.bsky.social · 19/12/2024
Huge fan of Raven Pro, use it for most projects. But it works on a file-by-file basis which gets very tedious and slow when dealing with big datasets.

Daniella Teixeira @daniteixeira.bsky.social · 18/12/2024
We’ve almost got detection down pat… that is part of the problem (a good problem to have!). We can apply ML to massive datasets now but validation using existing tools is painfully slow… :(

Daniella Teixeira @daniteixeira.bsky.social · 17/12/2024
#Bioacoustics researchers: what's your go-to software for viewing/validating/labelling large datasets? Anything that can handle info from multiple audio files (i.e. 100s of files) in one place, display them all nicely for easy viewing?
