This month on "Story in the Public Square" - September 2026

"Story in the Public Square" is a national broadcast that unpacks narratives with outside impact on public understanding and public policy. Hosted by Jim Ludes, the show can be seen each week on public television stations across the United States and seeks to study, celebrate and tell stories that matter.
Tamryn Spruill: September 21-27, 2026

For 30 seasons, female professional athletes in the United States have been part of an effort to build a professional basketball league while also confronting racism, sexism, and anti-LGBTQ bias. Award-winning journalist Tamryn Spruill recounts that history—and the players whose gritty determination on and off the court—built the league and changed the country.

September also features authors Carol Lin, Carissa Véliz, and Caitlin Dickerson.

People need to deepen their knowledge and understanding. I didn't write this for me, I wrote this for you, and for players who deserve more than hidden figure status. I wrote it for those who love the WNBA already and for those who are just getting to know it. Bigger than me; bigger than 🏀.

I wrote this book because it needed to be written. After decades of erasure, this book, this history, became a necessity. Writing about the violence of erasure for years while being suppressed on platforms like this one has taken a personal toll. But I think of the bigger picture:

It’s not a dated history, but one that is alive and tracking to this very moment in our shared cultural and political reality. “You must know history to keep it from repeating” is an adage we must really take to heart and into action.
"History is not just what happened long ago. It is what we choose to recognize now. Just as early Black basketball was once widely covered yet is often overlooked today, making it seem less significant than it was, Tamryn Spruill's The W shows how limited media visibility shapes the value of modern women’s basketball and calls for the attention the game deserves this moment, not someday. The W is a thoughtful and important work."

-Claude Johnson,
author of The Black Fives: The Epic Story of Basketball’s Forgotten Era"Tamryn Spruill's care, passion, love and reverence for the WNBA, the players, coaches, legendary teams, and its history are on full display within these pages. For those of us that have been fans of the W since opening night back in 1997, this is the exact book we've all been waiting for to commemorate 30 seasons of women's professional basketball in North America."

journalist, historian, and author
