Soviet born person here. Nazis and USSR were in fact allied, and started WW2 by invading Poland together, and held a parade together in Brest-Litovsk. Below is a pictue of a victory arch that was used during the parade. Note both swastika and hammer and sickle.

My birth town is about the size of Bakhmut, it's less than 40 miles away from the Russian border. In March of 2022, it was close to getting surrounded by Russia. But it stands, and doesn't look like this, because Russia got its ass kicked and withdrew their forces to the border.
