Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Yes it’s a bit like if your landlord came by to clog your toilet and put a hole in your wall every once in a while and then you had to fix it. 020
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Todd this is what they get paid the big bucks for. You can’t get this kind of service from arXiv. 131
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I’ve been noticing that different theories entail that the grinder lives in different places in the mind. 010
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I’m just waiting for you all to find out about the universal grinder. 140

Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 20/09/2026I suspect that there is more deferring to journal referees further down the job-market hierarchy where it’s more common to be hiring in an area where nobody in the dept has much expertise, fwiw. 220
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 03/09/2026Agreed. I think we’re also banning phones from schools though. 100

Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 27/08/2026This piece goes into incredible detail showing that the history of analytic philosophy has tons of radical left wing politics mixed into it. It’s just empirically false that analytic philosophy has been a mostly conservative or right wing thing. www.3-16am.co.uk/articles/a-t...3-16am.co.ukA Turd in the Punchbowl: Initial Thoughts On Christoph Shuringa’s A ...When I was first hired as a junior professor of philosophy in 1987, I joined a department (at Stony Brook University) that had three... 181

Reposted by Dan HarrisBrett Karlan @oldjerryfodor.bsky.social · 24/08/2026Every time I wonder if my undergraduate lectures are too hard, I remember a week 1 lecture I saw Michael Smith give to a freshman-dominated class, which crucially depended on the distinction between "intention" and "intension," but which he never wrote down, had any slides for, or verbally flagged 5794
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 22/08/2026I like the opposite reading: you loved opera until you brought it under the concept “singing,” and then you hated it. 020
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 21/08/2026Yes although he of course drew some questionable anti-theoretical conclusions of his own. 010
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 21/08/2026(I might just not know where people considered this possibility, however, because of my epistemology-free upbringing.) 120
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 21/08/2026But I guess I was also thinking that it’s notably absent from consideration that, from what I can remember, nobody ever seemed to consider the possibility that, e.g., we use “know” sometimes in a reliabilist/externalist way and sometimes in an internalist way. 110
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 21/08/2026I’m not sure what notion of philosophical significance is at issue. This may be because I was trained and now work in a department where epistemology is outlawed. 121
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 21/08/2026I guess I think that people tended to swipe aside what they saw as edge cases, but that being alive to polysemy would have forced them to reckon with the possibility that even what they took to be the central uses of “know” were more heterogenous than they assumed. 120
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 21/08/2026But I think it’s hard not to think that this is one of the weird methodological assumptions underlying post-Gettier work on knowledge, too. Or for that matter a lot of post-Grice work on meaning. 110
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 21/08/2026One in philosophy of language that has exercised me lately is “say,” which there is a huge literature about, in which it tends to be presupposed that enough method of cases will give us the right necessary-and-sufficient conditions. 140
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 21/08/2026Or in some cases it’s just a presupposition of the whole debate that there is only one sense of “F.” Like, it’s just methodologically off limits in much 20th century epistemology to say “oh maybe we sometimes use “knows” in a factive way and sometimes in a non-factive way.” 150
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 21/08/2026It’s just that you have tons of cases of people trying to give necessary-and-suffficient conditions for “x is F” and not recognizing that they’re using intuitive judgments about two different senses of “F” as evidence when doing so. 130
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 21/08/2026Well as usual I think that Grice knew something that many others didn’t. 041
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 21/08/2026It really is fun to think about how much of analytic philosophy could not have happened if everyone had just recognized that most words are polysemous. 7360

Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 03/08/2026Some friends and I caught a case of this because we were all talking about papers we were refereeing and then realized that they were the same paper at different journals. There were reputational consequences. 160

Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 27/06/2026Duh he got voted out after a term, failed to incite an insurrection, but then the kid who became president next was equally young but more saliently so, and that kid’s last-minute attempt to let a grown-up run in their place was a catastrophic failure. So he’s back for revenge. 020

Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 11/06/2026I totally agree. I love in-person conferences. I'm questioning whether online conferences have enough of what's valuable about in-person conferences to make them better than these more fragmented alternatives. 010
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 11/06/2026To put my cards on the table: I really like in-person conferences, and I pretty much stopped doing online conferences after the pandemic. But I have gotten to know lots of new people by just emailing to ask them to zoom, in whatsappnd discord groups I've been added to, etc. 110
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 11/06/2026I agree, but I think those things are just way better in person, and needn't be synchronous. I would also add "employer-subsidized trips to fun cities" and "taking breaks from domestic responsibilities" to your list, and online conferences can't do that. 110
Dan Harris @danielwharris.bsky.social · 11/06/2026What do you think this adds to just being able to email, text, zoom with people about their work? I guess I wonder if most of the benefits that could come from online conferences are already being had in these other ways. 200
