On 9/11 I think it is objectively correct to remember the literally million-plus lives America extinguished in its ensuing rage but that is just me I guess

The Oriole Bird lost its life trying to stand in the way of one of the club's patented three-game losing streaks. Reached for comment, Mike Elias said it would be immediately replaced with a more fitting mascot: an apple-cheeked blonde man-boy.

Troy Jackson: Eight years ago today, Maine women begged Susan Collins not to confirm Brett Kavanaugh. She did it anyway. He helped overturn Roe v. Wade. And today, she says she has no regrets. Would you trust her to pick the next Supreme Court justice?

So, just to review. In roughly seven months the US has had to abandon all bases in the Middle East, flee from a British base, the petrodollar system that is the foundation for hegemony has collapsed, and we’re facing historical energy and food crises. Great work. www.cnn.com/2026/10/04/p...

The other big part of it is when you are only reading abstracts you miss in the part in the actual paper where there is a ton of dialogue about how the nonviolence dividend gets completely washed out in the case of separatist/anticolonial/independence movements

I mean the obvious more contemporary example with parallel to Israel is apartheid South Africa. Regardless, the point is that the idea that armed insurgency is ineffective in social change writ large is a wildly different argument than within the context of separatist movements.

Dan Tuke @danieltuke.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Those 30+ countries becoming independent are kinda proof positive of the whole point that if you want independence from an oppressive power, you do see that right?

Dan Tuke @danieltuke.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

Dan Tuke @danieltuke.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Secession campaigns / wars of independence are a uniquely challenging set of circumstances, and Chenoweth and Stepan explicitly state these movements are the exception to the rule on the whole efficacy of violent vs nonviolent resistance issue.
100
Dan Tuke @danieltuke.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The literature on the politics of resistance is far more complicated than to just say “armed insurgency doesn’t work” or even that it is particularly ineffective. Most armed insurgencies don’t win, yet most independent states got there in part due to those insurgencies.
100
Dan Tuke @danieltuke.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Idk point being none of this to me dismisses the importance of armed insurgency in the birth of the Israeli state, nor does it get at the larger meta point which is that armed insurgency is absolutely, unequivocally a path to independence or autonomy.

Dan Tuke @danieltuke.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
But none of those genocides were really a pivotal part of the insurgency phase of the births of the nations as much as they were the violence of the consolidation of a new ethnostate.
