When the neighbors across the street, Nemo and Ofelia, came over to visit Mom, I asked them for help.

I spent most of the day sitting beside Mom, simply holding her hand.

Another sleepless night in Lasara.

When Dad and I returned home after visiting Aurora House in Weslaco, I walked into the living room, kissed Mom on the forehead, and sat beside her. She had lost much of her appetite for food, but not ...

Dad knocked on my old bedroom door at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. His words still echo in my mind: “Daniel, come. I think she’s leaving us.”

Janie, the hospice nurse, has told me countless times how much she loves my parents. She often says they tell anyone who will listen how proud they are of me and that they don’t know what they would d...

I kept asking myself, Do I hire someone to help Dad and Janie? Is that what we need? The questions never stopped. I shared my concerns with Janie, the hospice nurse. She gently explained that Mom was ...

As the plane carried me from Austin to McAllen, I sat by the window watching a sky that looked like cotton candy. The clouds were thick and endless, and not once during the flight could I see the grou...

I woke up at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, and hit the ground in fifth gear. I was at the airport by 6:00 a.m. to catch a flight to Austin and then on to McAllen—thank you, Hollis, for givi...

Long before Mom fell and fractured her femur, Mitch had already booked his trip to South Texas from December 25 through January 1. He even rented a car so we could take Mom wherever she wanted to go.

From the day Mom fell on Sunday, December 14, 2025, until I boarded a plane for South Texas on Tuesday, December 16, she called me constantly—eight, ten, sometimes twelve times a day. Every conversati...
