The new emoji system tray icon (which I like) inadvertently (and at a glance) makes me think my laptop's battery is suddenly drained and in power-saving mode

But maybe the sleeper trick is what @zac.onl got (and I have arriving today): the Samsung Galaxy FIT 3, which does all the basics with a 1.6" OLED display. And it's only ~$50 on Amazon, which is 👀 I'm surprised more people don't talk about it. amzn.to/4hYlF6J

Related, I didn't think I'd like the Galaxy Watch Ultra this much due to its size and possibly overkill, but I think it looks and feels fantastic, the slightly longer battery life is welcomed, and it's just kind of fun. No surprise that the display is awesome.

I've used Oura, Fitbit, and Apple for fitness/health tracking, but Samsung Health does the best job of not just showing data but also *explaining* to people what is expected and good and why specific metrics are important. Layout, UI, etc., are A+. I'm fantastic at lying down and doing nothing 🦥

Two of the dumbest, most gullible shitheads on the internet. Imagine instantly having all the world's knowledge at your fingertips and not using it because you're too stupid to know your limits. You believe what you want to be true to fit your ideology (this goes for the left and the right).

Exposing the troubling practices at Valnet, Inc — a company prioritizing clicks over quality, and exploitation over fair pay. In an already challenging media landscape, it's disheartening to see writers treated this way. Solidarity with all affected creators ✊ www.thewrap.com/valent-labor...

In Edge, a new lower bar with smooth animation and voice. You can either type in your query and the side panel opens or hit the Screen Share button and ask Copilot about what's on your screen via voice.

Microsoft Copilot and its Edge version are getting some nice upgrades. If you ask it for directions, it'll send them to your phone, e.g., Google Maps in my case. I just turn on my phone, and Maps is already navigating.

Do you have a citation for this? "Consumers are using Windows less and less since smartphones have become their main "computer"." Because data says Windows laptops are still heavily in use and are expected to grow in 2025/2026 with Covid refresh cycle, AI PCs influence, and EoL for Windows 10.

Idea: Integrate GroupMe into Windows 11. Tie it automatically to your MS Account, and make it like MSN Messenger, which we all used to love. Bring back the shake/nudge feature. But, noooo ... it pushed Skype and now Teams even though younger people (college) use GroupMe.

181

Daniel Rubino @danielrubino.com · 28/02/2025

Let me cut to the conclusion of this "strategy:" No one, absolutely no one, is going to switch to f'in Microsoft Teams who's a straight-up consumer. These people are delusional. I have no idea what you can do about Skype, but this won't help Teams (non-enterprise).

Microsoft Copilot gives a fair overview of YouTube videos nearly instantly in the Microsoft Edge browser. It's akin to asking someone what a video was about without going into every detail or making a transcript. Tech is getting so good.

Related I think Samsung's AI-driven Now Brief has a ton of potential. It's added more categories since we were seeded review samples, which is great, but I hope to see more proactive insights as it builds out the plumbing for the software.

So, Samsung sent me the Galaxy Watch Ultra + Ring, which w/ the S25 Ultra has replaced my Oura Ring/iPhone mini/Apple Watch setup (which I only use for the gym). I like Watch Ultra way more than I thought I would. (Also LOL at it being gold; guess I'm married to Samsung).

Forget deep state; let's get a police state going! Does anyone want to tell Trump that the National Security Act of 1947 and the Central Intelligence Agency Act of 1949 prevent the CIA from operating in the US and not engaging in LE? I guess he forgot the last time they broke those laws.

This person nails the 'drone/UFO' craze. It reminds me of the online larpers yearning for a "second civil war." These are just unhappy people, wanting something more in life. Fantasy is a great escape, people want their life to be a Netflix series.

If there were aliens, they'd roll their big black insect-like eyes into the back of their globular heads. This is why they won't make contact. We're the dumbest. We're absolutely in the mass hysteria phase right now. This is how folklore and superstitions are created, though, which is fun.

030

Daniel Rubino @danielrubino.com · 15/12/2024

I'm still on this theory that this is DoD, but some of the rumors about why they're not saying anything are not rosy. Basically, the speculation is these drones are searching for something, up to and including tracking "gamma rays" and hunting "hidden WMDs" on the east coast.

In comments, there are links to two FAA posts noting low-altitude airspace ("From the surface up to and including 2000 feet") closures for "special security reasons" in parts of NJ, including Bedminster. Note the dates. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I can't buy that it's Iran or aliens.

As a side note, I'm happy to report that the official Windows Central account is now domain-verified. These things take longer when you work for a big company (Future plc), but it's great to see.

3494

Daniel Rubino @danielrubino.com · 27/11/2024

And here's it vs M4. Tied on multi-core, Apple pulls ahead on single. The point is still valid: 32GB/1TB vs 16GB/512GB for $50 less.

100

Daniel Rubino @danielrubino.com · 27/11/2024

Intel doesn't use ARM? This is Qualcomm/ARM-based and is faster than many Intel gaming laptops (CPU). It pulls ahead of M3 on multi-core. For battery, Mashable said 23 hours. Tom's Guide 15H, 44 minutes. Analytics Insight 17 hours, 38 minutes. Apple's edge here has diminished, let's be clear.

100

Daniel Rubino @danielrubino.com · 21/11/2024

That's because we work for a very big company (Future plc) and cannot modify our domain/registrar or do the programming required to do so ourselves. A few of us, including myself already DO have custom domains, so we KNOW about it, but it's a process via IT to get the job accomplished.

I'm headed to Berlin today for IFA (lots of big news around Intel and Qualcomm this week) and picked up these pricey boys. So far, they're incredible 🔥. I'm coming from QC35s and Sony MX3s. I love Bose's sound profile so much. The immersive audio is quite the experience.

In theory, it should not have been THAT good, but between the cast and dialogue, it was one of the most fun movies I've seen in ages. Plus, Themberchaud, the chubby dragon.
